It appears Warner Bros. went on a little domain-shopping spree for its
Batman: Arkham Asylum sequel. Domain digger
Superannuation has unearthed over a dozen new registrations by the publisher that reference the Dark Knight or events in the first
Arkham Asylum game.
Several of the domain names suggest a range of possible "Arkham" titles for the sequel, including: Arkham City, New Arkham, Rise of Arkham and City of Arkham. There's also one domain that references Warden Sharp and his run for mayor. Avoiding spoilers, if you completed the "Spirit of Arkham" quest line in the first
critically acclaimed game, it would seem to be a possible springboard for events in the sequel. We've listed all the new domain names after the break.

The
Mortal Kombat reboot had to have been one of the more interesting surprises around E3. We certainly enjoyed
what we saw at the show, which seemed to depict a game very much back to its roots -- you can't get more "
MK" than
splitting a guy in two with a metal hat, after all. And in speaking with
Gamasutra, Ed Boon confirms that he's really gunning for the hardcore players with this latest installment.
"Oddly enough, this [new
Mortal Kombat] is the first one in a while that we've really made a conscious effort that we are going to focus hard on the hardcore player," he said. While Boon concedes that there are far more casual players out there than hardcore, he values the "opinionated" fans who go online and make their voices heard.
Despite the existence of those passionate individuals, Boon thinks it's tough to sell a fighting game nowadays. "While I certainly think there is an audience for that, there's not a very huge audience for the really complex [fighting] games. Unfortunately, the sales numbers kind of demonstrate that," he added. While we certainly understand what he's saying, we'd be hard-pressed to agree.
What about games like
Street Fighter IV and
Tekken 6? How about newcomers like
BlazBlue? And that's not even taking into account the success of digitally distributed titles like
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 -- so while we'd concede that fighting games can sometimes have a steep learning curve, we'd say now is a wonderful time of resurgence for the genre. Embrace the love, Boon!

While E3 attendees file out of a darkened room after a demonstration of the new
Mortal Kombat, series co-creator Ed Boon is approached by a pair of enthusiastic fans. He gladly gives them a few autographs, and his face lights up in surprise when he learns that they've grown enamored with the fighting franchise in their 18 years of existence -- despite being born well after its inception. Has
Mortal Kombat really been around for almost 20 years?
Working from NetherRealm Studios -- owned by
Mortal Kombat's new custodian, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment -- Ed Boon doesn't limit his interaction with fans to chance encounters. The upcoming reboot is being driven by three major requests from series fans, which Boon calls his "marching orders." They've suggested a return to the M-rated presentation following 2008's
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (check), a deeper fighting system (check) and, of course, a new set of outrageous fatalities (check out that perforated spleen).
Boon claims that every combatant's interior, from the soon-to-be-shattered bones to the sickeningly squishy internal organs, has been modeled. It's not often that you get to literally see an artist's blood, sweat and tears in a game, but Boon assures me that when attacks find their mark, all "that shit pours out of them."

We admit it: This latest trailer for
Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 resonates with us in a big, big way. How could we not be on board with a video that shows how nearly every character from the first four books has been transmogrified into Lego form? That's like a sure-fire recipe for nerd ambrosia.
So, Lego Harry's good at flying on brooms, Lego Hermione is good at puzzle-solving and Lego Ron is good at ... being a good friend? We guess?

It turns out that our eyes weren't deceiving us yesterday, and Jeri Ryan really was playing Sonya Blade in that mysterious Mortal Kombat movie short. According to the former "Star Trek: Voyager" actress, the movie was part of a pitch that an unnamed director made for Warner Bros. to try and sell them on a film franchise relaunch.
"Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," Ryan wrote on her Twitter account. "I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)"
As an established face from the Trek universe, Ryan is no stranger to the vocal presence of large fan movements, and it looks like she wouldn't mind seeing the project get an extra push from the MK faithful who appreciated her work. Alas, without a confirmation from Warner Bros., we have no way of knowing whether or not they bit. But at least we'll always have this demo of what the movie could have looked like.
Would you like to see this MK movie get made? What other characters would you like to see if it does? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan's IMDb profiles don't currently mention anything about a new Mortal Kombat movie, but a new video clip clearly intended to introduce a Mortal Kombat movie employed two actors who bear striking resemblances to Black Dynamite and Seven of Nine. The new take on MK doesn't have any credits attached, nor does it look like Paul W.S. Anderson's "Mortal Kombat." It does, however, make you wonder if there isn't going to be a big movie announcement coming to E3.
The demonic energies and extra-dimensional elements seem to be all sapped out of the MK short acquired by Kotaku. Instead, the new takes on the best known bloodbath in fighting games opts for a distinctly more "Saw"-ish horror approach with some high-octane one-on-one combat slipped into the plot.
Purists may disapprove of the bare-faced Scorpion and deformed human version of Reptile who appear, but conceptually this is a movie I could get behind. "Mortal Kombat" originally hooked me with its old-style kung-fu movie look stuffed with random moments of cartoonish absurdity and violent excess that snuck in over the course of its first two sequels. The subtle nods to the video games' continuity and mythos here seem to operate the same way. I love the pacing.
If this is for real, it looks like it could be the first MK movie to really understand an effective use of gore in the context of its story as well. I don't know who made it or where it ultimately came from, but I want more.

Following
the success of its other MMO property,
Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited, it's not surprising that
Turbine has elected to make the three-year-old MMO
Lord of the Rings Online free-to-play sometime this fall. At that time, players will be able to download and explore the game for free, with the option to purchase additional content, including expansions, quest packs, items and "account services" from an online storefront. Players will also have the option to become "VIP" members, which automatically gives them access to these items. Turbine did not specify if VIP membership was a one-time fee or an ongoing subscription cost.
If you're wondering how
Lord of the Rings Online will operate under this new pricing structure -- well, Turbine
probably is as well. Both parties' curiosity will likely be satisfied by
a closed beta, which kicks off June 16.
