Hey, check out this Claptrap toy, everybody — it’s dancing, it’s dancing

July 26th, 2010 No comments
Everyone's favorite character from Borderlands is getting a toy, courtesy of NECA. No, we're not talking about a Scooter action figure (though that sounds like an excellent idea), we're talking about bounty board attendant supreme, CL4P-TP -- Claptrap, for short.

NECA was on-hand at Comic-Con this past weekend, showing off the prototype above. The final version, which will be able to recite lines from the game, is slated for release this October. Frankly, we can't wait to get our own, mostly because we've always wondered what kind of loot our house has been hiding.

StarCraft 2 action figures shown off at Comic-Con

July 25th, 2010 No comments
Blizzard's line-up of action figures based on its handful of lucrative franchises will soon expand to include the burly, frontline soldiers of StarCraft 2. The DC Unlimited-manufactured miniatures were prominently displayed at the company's Comic-Con booth, which the toy trade site Figures.com captured through the magic of digital photography.

The first set of action figures include a Terran Space Marine, the Protoss heavyweight Zeratul and returning StarCraft protagonist Jim Raynor. If you're hoping to recreate the strategic action of the series on your bedroom nightstand, you might want to check out Figures' detailed images of these three toys, which are set to hit store shelves in spring 2011.

Square Enix making Halo: Reach action figures

July 22nd, 2010 No comments
We'd like to take a moment to console the people with limited reading comprehension who saw "Square Enix" and "Halo: Reach" in the headline and assumed, for the splittest of seconds, that the former was working on a Kingdom Hearts-esque mash-up in Bungie's franchise. The truth is much less titillating: Square Enix Products is manufacturing and distributing three action figures from the Halo Reach franchise this fall under its Play Arts -Kai- toy label.

The first three members of Noble Team to be included in Vol. 1 of the Reach toy line are Noble Six, Emile and Jun -- three names which likely don't carry much resonance with you, considering the game isn't out yet. Hopefully Squeenix's second set of figures, due out early next year, will be a tad more recognizable. Click past the jump to see the first three figures in a Halo Waypoint video from Square Enix's Comic-Con booth.

This M. Bison statue should give you all the nightmares you need

We know you've run short of things to place on your nightstand to fill you with mortal terror while you slumber. Might we suggest this 1/4-scale, 19" tall statuette modeled after Street Fighter's ever-grinning antagonist, M. Bison? We guarantee it'll get the job done.

Club Nintendo Gold and Platinum awards announced

July 1st, 2010 No comments
Here's what you've been buying Nintendo games all year for! Well, hopefully you've been buying Nintendo games because you want to play them, but here's the secondary reason: Nintendo announced the Platinum and Gold Elite Status Gifts for North America's Club Nintendo.

Those who reached Gold status (300 coins or more since last July) get a calendar, and Platinum status holders (600 coins or more) get this neat Mario figurine thing. To claim your reward, you have to sign into Club Nintendo and provide a shipping address. The prizes will ship by the end of this year, according to Nintendo.

And now ... the process begins again. It's time to start registering games for next year, like that copy of Sin & Punishment you were just about to buy.

A super expensive Super Sonic figure

June 23rd, 2010 No comments
Just in time for Sonic's birthday, high-end figure company First 4 Figures is taking pre-orders on a new statue of the hedgehog hero's occasional Chaos Emerald-infused Super Saiyan form, Super Sonic. The figure depicts Super Sonic in the "classic" Genesis-era art style, sparking across a platform in Sonic 2's Chemical Plant Zone.

If you want to buy one of these 15-inch-tall figures, you'll have to dig up some Chaos Emeralds or other precious materials of your own. Two versions will ship in the first quarter next year: one for $140 and a deluxe version that lights up for twenty dollars more.

Preview: Lego Universe

June 18th, 2010 No comments
There's no question at all: Lego Universe is a game built for children. Creative Director Ryan Seabury says the primary audience of the game is ages 8-12, and the interface is very clearly young user-friendly, with big, brightly colored buttons, and easy-to-use UI widgets. The game centers on collecting "imagination," and while there is combat in the game, it's simple and trouble-free, more fun than strategic.

But here's the thing: good game design is ageless. And Lego Universe seems like a tidy summation of everything both developer NetDevil has learned about making MMOs, and Lego has learned over 75 years of making classic toys.

Swag Sunday: PlayStation Toy Bundle

May 23rd, 2010 No comments
We're picky and choosy about which video game-themed "action figures" make their way onto the empty spaces at Joystiq HQ, but we'd happily add this week's Swag Sunday prize: the Ratchet & Clank "Series 1 Ratchet with Transforming Clank" (seen above).

For a chance to adorn your abode with the pair, all you have to is tell us in the comments below what your favorite Ratchet & Clank game is and, more importantly, why. You see, we've got this ModNation Racers papercraft we've been itching to give to someone. Someone who's really eloquent, though. The kind of person who would thoughtfully explain their choice for favorite R&C game. But who do we know like that? Hmmm ...
  • Leave a comment telling us what your favorite Ratchet & Clank game is and why.
  • You must be 15 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec).
  • Limit one entry per person.
  • This entry period ends at 5:31PM ET on Monday, May 24.
  • At that time, we'll randomly select one winner to receive one package containing one Ratchet & Clank "Series 1 Ratchet with Transforming Clank" (ARV $19.99) and one winner to receive one ModNation Racers papercraft; check your emails!
  • For a list of complete rules, click here.

What is Joyswag? Since we don't keep the games and merchandise we receive for review or promotional purposes, it becomes "Joyswag," which is passed along to our readers. Please note that Joyswag may be in "used" condition.

Worried you’d never get a collectible based on Gears of War comic character Jace Stratton, a gentleman who has yet to put any face time into an actual Gears of War game series? Well quit it, worrywort! (You’re only hurting yourself.) NECA recently told Toy News International that it’ll be bringing Stratton — and several BioShock 2 figures — to the upcoming 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International for sale in limited quantities.

We’d love to tell you more about the BioShock 2 figures, but we’re not trying to ruin the end of the game for those of you who might still be wary of spoilers. You can have a look for yourself right here.

Batman: Arkham Asylum action figures available Jan. 2011

May 18th, 2010 No comments
Didn't like the ending to Batman: Arkham Asylum? Well, grab a stop-motion camera and make a whole new one with the action figures when they release January 12, 2011. The "Series 1" figures include Batman, Joker with Scarface, Scarecrow and Harley Quinn. Each figure has "multiple points of articulation," comes with display base and stands between six and seven inches tall.

There's currently no price on the dolls, but can one really put a price on creating a better Arkham Asylum finale in stop-motion?
