More ’sluggish’ sales plague Capcom financials

July 29th, 2010 No comments
Capcom experienced another "sluggish" performance in its latest financial quarter -- the first of Fiscal 2010, from April 1 to June 30 -- and consequently blamed slow growth of Lost Planet 2 sales, among other things. Net sales for the quarter were down 2.4 percent year-over-year at 19 million yen ($219 million) and net income dropped a dramatic 90 percent from last year to the tune of 213 million yen ($2.5 million).

Although titles like Super Street Fighter IV and Monster Hunter Frontier Online showed what Capcom calls "steady growth," LP2 and Monster Hunter Tri only sold at a "sluggish pace." The first two weeks of Ghost Trick sales were also met with disappointment, although the game premiered at number two in its first week of Japanese sales.

The Japanese publisher also lamented "shrinking" US and European markets "under the stagnating economy," as well as fluctuating exchange rates. Though sales across the board were lower than expected, Capcom considers its financial forecast for this fiscal year to be unaffected.

Ono: Super Street Fighter IV for 3DS won’t alter gameplay

July 28th, 2010 No comments
According to producer Yoshinori Ono, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition on the Nintendo 3DS won't offer radically different gameplay. In a Famitsu interview summarized by Andriasang, Ono assured fans that, among other things, the 3D visuals won't lead to 3D gameplay (turn to Tekken X Street Fighter for that.) "The gameplay will be the same as Super Street Fighter IV," he said.

There might be some additional control options, however. The article states that the team is considering mapping special attacks to the slide pad or touch screen. He also suggested that Capcom wants to use the system's wireless connectivity for both communication and gameplay, though he didn't specify whether he meant online or local wireless.

According to Famitsu, the game will have all 35 Super Street Fighter IV characters, and is currently 10 percent complete.

Madden 11 demo leads rush of Xbox Marketplace content

July 27th, 2010 No comments
The Xbox 360 forecast is absolutely droughtful this week at retail, with the Clash of the Titans theater DVD release tie-in drying up store shelves. Thankfully, the Xbox Live Marketplace is overflowing with new content this week, including today's release of the new Madden demo.

Additionally, DLC for a pool of recent releases -- Alan Wake, Lost Planet 2 and Transformers, to name a few -- flowed out today, and the "Summer of Arcade" shines on tomorrow with Hydro Thunder Hurricane. (Did you read our review yet?) Finally, Borderands' trio of add-ons is on sale through Sunday.

Check out complete details of the week's XBLM content after the break.

Super Street Fighter IV’s brawlers getting new DLC outfits this fall

July 25th, 2010 No comments
We wouldn't blame you for confusing yesterday's Street Fighter-focused Comic-Con panel for a wedding ceremony -- after all, it contained announcements of something old, something new, something borrowed (that is to say, fighters from Tekken) and ... well, Chun-Li's new outfit is blue, isn't it? Fine, the analogy doesn't quite work, but the fact remains: Series producer Yoshinori Ono revealed that all of Super Street Fighter IV's characters would receive new outfits in a DLC pack to be released this fall.

Kotaku caught an image of the slide showing off some of these new outfits, including a Catwoman-esque get-up for Cammy, and a nightmarish, open-chested leather suit for Rufus. Note that we're using "nightmarish" in the literal sense, here. As in: "We plan to have nightmares about this, possibly as soon as tonight."

Super Street Fighter IV Arcade changes could hit consoles via patch

July 13th, 2010 No comments
Capcom's Yoshinori Ono has been doing the press rounds talking about Super Street Fighter IV lately. The developer is planning to port the game to arcades and Ono implied during a Famitsu interview (via IGN) that any changes for the game's arcade release could make its way back into the console game. "If it's a tuning update similar to the June 15 update, I believe we'd be able to offer it for free," Ono said. "However, if it's the kind of update that adds new moves, it's possible that it could be paid."

Ono said something similar in an interview with the PlayStation community. "If we do make some changes to the arcade version, it is not impossible to apply the same changes to the PS3 version. However, as I can't get down to it yet, I have to ask you to wait for a while." What kind of things would you guys want to see in a patch?

This M. Bison statue should give you all the nightmares you need

July 11th, 2010 No comments
We know you've run short of things to place on your nightstand to fill you with mortal terror while you slumber. Might we suggest this 1/4-scale, 19" tall statuette modeled after Street Fighter's ever-grinning antagonist, M. Bison? We guarantee it'll get the job done.

Super Street Fighter IV getting balance fixes along with DLC next month

May 21st, 2010 No comments

According to Andriasang’s translation of a post on Capcom’s Japanese blog, the developer is planning to roll out a patch for Super Street Fighter IV on June 15 — the same day as the release of the game’s Tournament Mode DLC — which will remove a few exploits and address some balancing issues players have discovered since the title’s launch. For the full list of (highly technical) changes included in the update, just click past the jump.

The patch remedies a few sizable issues, such as the unblockable Ultra exploit — however, it doesn’t return E. Honda’s “Thousand-Hand Bitch Slap” maneuver to its original, unbeatable glory. Hopefully that particular fix will come in a later update.

Terrible idea: play Street Fighter IV with a guitar

May 20th, 2010 No comments
Strum up the awkward and hammer down the idea of using an actual guitar as a Street Fighter IV controller. OpenChord.org produces an open source guitar controller meant for use in games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but like a silent film actor making the switch to talkies, its use for a fighting game seems misplaced.

We're most certainly fans of peripherals being used in new and nerdy ways. Heck, we applaud the fancy footwork used by Nick Hagman in his DDR pad challenges. But this OpenChord thing for fighting games just seems unwieldy. Check out the video after the break.

April NPD: Sam Fisher’s grim month

May 13th, 2010 No comments
Apparently everybody was paying taxes last month instead of buying games, because despite analysts' expectations, sales for April were way down. As you can see below, sales dropped out on every single console that NPD tracked during April, with the Wii taking the biggest hit, down 50 percent from March. Hardware sales overall fell by 37 percent.

Software sales didn't do any better -- Splinter Cell Conviction was a bright spot and Super Street Fighter IV just barely made the list (which you can find after the break), but otherwise it was all leftovers from March and previous months. NPD reports that last month's 11 percent industry drop-off was the "worst year-over-year decline...since July '09, and the fourth largest year-over-year percentage decline ever." The industry got rained on -- here's hoping April showers bring some May flowers.

-DS: 441K260K (-37%)
-Wii: 277K 281K (-50%)
-360: 185K 153K (-45%)
-PS3: 181K 133K (-42%)
-PSP: 66K 54K (-44%)
-PS2 sales are no longer being tracked by NPD -- goodbye, old friend.

See the top 10 games after the break. Sales figures for the games ranked six through 10 were withheld by NPD for unstated reasons.
