Syndicate Wars successor Satellite Reign heads to Kickstarter
As expected, real-time strategy game Satellite Reign recently began its Kickstarter project, and will need £350,000 ($532,455) by July 28 to become a reality.

Satellite Reign is a real-time strategy game that draws inspiration from Syndicate Wars, another tactical game developed in 1996 for PlayStation and DOS by 5 Lives lead Mike Diskett. The project boasts emergent gameplay within a "living metropolis," along with tactical combat driven by different character classes, weapons and augmentations.

Satellite Reign's crowdfunding campaign is already off to a great start, as it has raised £95,474 ($145,244) thanks to 3,355 backers so far. The developer is looking to bring the game to Steam and GOG for PC, Mac and Linux, with DRM-free options being made available to all backers.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown for Mac comes to Steam

June 28th, 2013 No comments
The Mac version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is available now on Steam for $40. The news represents a curious turnaround for the Mac version's developer and general Mac specialist Feral Interactive, who told us back in May it "doesn't release games on Steam."

A month later, Feral announced the arrival of the Mac version on Steam, which it says supports cross-platform multiplayer across Windows PC and Mac. Also, if you've bought the PC version on Steam, you'll have free access to the Mac version.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown launched a full-scale invasion of our Top 10 of 2012 list, eventually notching a commendable second place behind Journey. Since then, Firaxis' extraterrestrial strategy game has hovered across to iOS, where it's currently available for $20.

Steam belts out Rocksmith daily deal; Chivalry, Natural Selection 2 weekend deals

Steam belts out Rocksmith daily deal Chivalry, Natural Selection 2 weekend deals
Rocksmith, Ubisoft's guitar tutorial software, is in the Steam daily sale spotlight today, down to $7.50 until 10am PT tomorrow. This sale doesn't mitigate the need for a Rocksmith Real Tone Cable, so you'll need to purchase that separately.

Steam has also initiated its weekend deals, highlighting both first-person medieval combat game Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and the alien-versus-human multiplayer shooter, Natural Selection 2, for $8.50 each. Unfortunately, both of these games also require cables to play - like a power cable and possibly some kind of display cable.

Rogue Legacy stars knights with different (dis)abilities, out now on PC

Rogue Legacy stars knights with different disabilities, out now

No name says "knight in shining armor" quite like "Lady Jojobo The Flatulent Dwarf Mage." Surely "Lady Jojobo The Short, Gassy Witch" doesn't have the same ring to it.

She's one of many heroes in Rogue Legacy that suffer from different debilitating issues, such as Sir John The Near-Sighted Knight and Sir Dude The Giant Colorblind Ninja (we're not sure which of those last descriptors is meant to be the debilitating one). Rogue Legacy launched today on PC for $15 via Steam, GOG, Desura, Gamersgate and developer Cellar Door itself, with this little Humble Store widget.

Cellar Door describes Rogue Legacy as a rogue-"lite" - every time a character dies, his child succeeds him, and as we know every child is unique. Uniquely flawed, mostly.

Valve updates Source SDK to include Oculus Rift support

June 26th, 2013 No comments
Source SDK updated with Mac, Linux, Oculus Rift support
Valve updated its free software dev tool Source SDK to support Mac OSX, Linux, and the Oculus Rift. Clients can be built and run in Windows, OSX, and Linux in Source SDK 2013, and dedicated servers can be run on Windows and Linux. As for the Oculus Rift, Source SDK 2013 can provide VR support via a compatible mod, enabling stereo and head tracking.

Users can find the Source SDK 2013 code at dev project hosting service github now, while a new license agreement means mod makers can share their work "more easily." Also, the Hammer editor and other mod tools come with games rather than the SDK launcher, which Valve said is being phased out.

Retro City Rampage adds mod support, ‘Retro+’ enhanced graphics

Retro City Rampage adds mod support, 'Retro' enhanced graphics
A new update for Retro City Rampage on PC adds mod support, allowing players to experience a small slice of creator Brian Provinciano's life by creating their own vehicles, characters, fonts and color palettes in the game. The update also includes an optional Retro+ mode, upping the visual fidelity with dynamic soft shadows and doubling the number of colors displayed on-screen at once.

The Steam version of Retro City Rampage updates automatically; for GOG and DRM-free owners, they'll need to log into their respective download pages and grab the 1.11 update manually. If you have yet to pick up this love letter to video games, Steam has dropped the price to $3.74 until 10am PT today.
