Hitman: Absolution is absolutely $12 at Best Buy

June 30th, 2013 No comments
Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution are on sale for a mere $12 at Best Buy right now.

While the deal includes free shipping, the game is no longer listed as available for shipping. Instead, those looking to save a few dollars on the game can opt to pick up a copy at select locations that still have it in stock. If the diminishing stock at our local stores is any indication, this deal many not last much longer.

Square Enix explains former CEO’s current role within company

June 28th, 2013 No comments
Square Enix's three initiatives to reform HD business
Early this morning Square Enix clarified the role of former Chief Executive Officer Yoichi Wada within the company, after his name popped up as "Chairman" on company forms a couple of days ago - a surprising turn given Square's financial condition. A spokesperson explained The Square Enix Group's entire business and operations are managed and executed by Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd, the parent company.

"Yoichi Wada has left the management of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd and no longer has any role in the parent company," the statement to Joystiq reads. "Currently, he is overseeing a portion of the business within Square Enix Co., Ltd (Square Enix Tokyo), one of the subsidiaries of the parent company. These businesses include emerging markets as well as social and mobile businesses."

Wada's current job title is Chairman for Square Enix Tokyo. He does not hold the right of representation for the company. The note concludes: "He has no authority in terms of the management of the Group."

Wada left the CEO position in March after the company's "extraordinary" loss"; he was replaced by former company director and CFO Yosuke Matsuda.

Former Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada listed as Chairman of the Board

Former Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada now Chairman of the Board
Former Square Enix Chief Executive Officer Yoichi Wada, who announced he would be stepping down as CEO in March after the company's "extraordinary" loss, has moved on to become... the company's Chairman of the Board. Square Enix's Japanese site has made note of the change.

To give this a little perspective, if the CEO is the captain, then the Chairman of the Board is the one who controls the ship. It's the job of the board to work in the best interest of investors. Given recent events, this is the part where you totally have permission to laugh or cry. Your choice.

We've reached out to Square Enix for confirmation and comment.

The Cast of ‘Final Fantasy XV’ Gives Boy Bands Everywhere a Run for Their Money

June 24th, 2013 No comments

FINAL FANTASY XV-header
Holy hell, "Final Fantasy" has fifteen number games -- never thought I'd see the day. ANYWAYS... feathered and flocked hair pervades the newest set of heroes!

First a little story set-up:

The only crystal left to the world lies in the Kingdom of Lucis. Upon striking a peace with the garrison state of Niflheim, Lucis rejoices in having at last brought the cold war to a close. Their celebrations, however, are premature. Under the guise of amity, Niflheim dispels the anti-armament runewall and launches a full-scale invasion of the kingdom. The peaceful lives Crown Prince Noctis and his entourage once knew are consumed by the flames of war as they struggle to mount a resistance.

Got all that? Good. Now, here's a nifty hi-rez image CGI models for you to copy/paste into your "Final Fantasy" slash fic pics.

Here's a rundown of the cast of characters:

• Noctis Lucis Caelum: A childhood affliction endowed Noctis, heir apparent to the throne of Lucis, with the mystical power to see a heavenly light, through which he could sense others' deaths. Noctis rejects rigid royal conventions and acts as somewhat of a renegade, much to the dismay of those who tend to him. Yet while "Noct" may act brash at times, he does so in defense of those loyal to him.

Gladiolus Amicitia: As lord of the noble House Amicitia, Gladiolus continues a line sworn to protect the crown. "Gladio" shares a friendship with Noctis that transcends birth and title, and his loyalty to his liege is born not of duty, but of brotherhood.

Ignis Scientia: Ever the unwavering voice of reason, Ignis was weaned on shrewd logic and a classical education from boyhood so that he might one day counsel the would-be king, Noctis. He applies the deep mutual understanding and trust they have built over time to help smooth over Noctis's brusqueness with others.

Prompto Argentum: The puckish playboy Prompto befriended Noctis in his school days. He wears a chip on his shoulder as an outsider to the royal circle, but remains eager to do all he can for the cause.

Cor Leonis: A living legend of Lucian lore, Lord Commander Cor Leonis's devotion to the art of war is surpassed only by that to his king. Little love is lost between the ill-starred stalwart and Noctis's retinue, yet honor binds him to keep watch over the group all the same.

"Final Fantasy XV" will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in the future.

Dragon Quest X headed to Japanese PCs

June 22nd, 2013 No comments
Dragon Quest X will come to Japanese Windows machines on September 26, Square Enix announced today during a livestream broadcast. The Toriyama-infused MMO, which originally debuted on the Wii last August, also launched on Wii U in March, though to comparatively lackluster results.

The PC version will be available in two flavors: A ¥3,990 standard edition that includes 20 days of free game time, and a ¥9,800 "Special Pack" bundle, which comes with a DQX-themed controller, security authenticator, Monster Encyclopedia, microfiber world map and item code for an as-of-yet unannounced in-game goodie.

Folks interested in getting in on the ongoing beta test can do so by downloading Nvidia's benchmarking tool - successfully passing will provide the opportunity to apply for beta access. Oh, and you need to speak Japanese. That's kind of an important piece to this whole "non-westernized Japan-only RPG" puzzle.

Square Enix appoints new heads of NA and EU studios

June 21st, 2013 No comments
Square Enix today announced changes in the management makeup of its North American and European studios. These announcements come after a fiscal year spent in the red, and layoffs in both North America and Europe as part of a "corporate restructuring."

All North American and European studios underneath the Square Enix umbrella will now be overseen by Darrell Gallagher, the company's new Head of Studios. Prior to receiving his assuredly jeweled crown and gold-plated throne, Gallagher was Studio Head of Crystal Dynamics - a position which he will continue to fill for the time being, in conjunction with his new duties.

Eidos Montreal will now be helmed by David Anfossi, former Deus Ex: Human Revolution executive producer. Meanwhile, Square Enix Montreal will be "built into a centre of excellence for game development on smart devices (primarily tablets)" under the guidance of Patrick Naud, according to the announcement.

Lightning Returns has elements with ‘severity of Dark Souls,’ says producer

Lightning Returns has elements with 'severity of Dark Souls,' says producer
Just as Final Fantasy 13-2 was to Final Fantasy 13, Lightning Returns is a different beast from the previous two FF13 games - with the emphasis maybe on beast. Speaking with Famitsu (as translated by Kotaku), game producer Yoshinori Kitase said, "If I were to describe the gameplay, I'd say that there are some elements with the severity of [something like] Dark Souls."

Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama told Famitsu Lightning Returns places emphasis on time and inventory management. Players only have a certain number of item slots, and start with only seven in-game days to complete the game, although this can be increased to thirteen via successfully completed missions. So, bits as tough as Dark Souls, with a touch of Majora's Mask and Resident Evil, then - and maybe some Final Fantasy too.

"Thinking economically is very important in this game!" noted Toriyama, perhaps while slowly tapping his fingers together and cackling maniacally.

Lighting Returns is due in North America on February 11, 2014, which is still a while away. In the meantime, you can check out our E3 hands-on where we took in how the game shifts up the combat's paradigms and Stagger systems for its returning party of one.
