‘Batman: Arkham City’ Screenshots, Featuring Catwoman, Harley Quinn And Two-Face

September 1st, 2010 No comments

Batman Arkham City

When word drops that 20 screenshots of "Batman: Arkham City" are floating around on the net, I'll admit that my heart starts to jump a little bit. It seems an anonymous Flickr account was hosting high rez shots of the hugely anticipated sequel and someone at NeoGAF was quick to snap them up. And once it's on NeoGAF, it's not going anywhere.

The "Batman: Arkham City" screenshots confirm that Catwoman and Two-Face will be integral to the plot, as suspected, and that Harley Quinn is sporting a brand new black and red leather look which might actually make her look filthier than she looked in the first game.

Some other things to check out in the screenshots: Detective mode is definitely back, complete with X-Ray vision. Batman also appears to have the new ability to set up vertical tight rope wires, giving him more maneuverability in the air. With new abilities come new challenges, though, as it appears baddies can now equip riot shields.

Worth keeping in mind that these screenshots haven't been officially released by Warner Bros., so they may, theoretically, be a massively well-funded hoax. But they're not. They're really not.

Based on these screens, it looks like Rocksteady is staying pretty true to the style of the first game. I'm probably most curious about how much the gameplay will change and what sort of new elements/modes will be introduced. I was a huge fan of the Silent Predator and Arena challenges of "Arkham Asylum," so to see those come back would be super.

Interview: ‘Batman: Arkham City’ Writer, Paul Dini, Discusses The Game’s Progress, Cut Moments From ‘Arkham Asylum’

August 5th, 2010 No comments

Batman: Arkham City

We all knew it was coming. The sequel to the best game of 2009, "Batman: Arkham Asylum." Earlier today, Game Informer revealed the title of the much-anticipated follow-up, "Batman: Arkham City." Paul Dini, who was the lead writer on the first game, is back again for the sequel, and spoke with MTV about how the game's progressing (in addition to his work on the "Ultimate Spider-man" animated series). He also mentioned some of the elements that got cut from the original "Arkham," but may see new life in "Arkham City."

Planned for release in 2011, "Batman: Arkham City" is likely Warner Bros.' biggest game of the year. With such a high-profile title, a holiday release is likely, which gives the team at Rocksteady a solid year of development time. Dini mentioned that work on "Arkham City" started right after "Arkham Asylum" was finished. "Everyone really loved it and it sold really well and it would be a mistake not to." That means the game will about have two years of development time under its belt when it finally releases.

Having a year remaining is not as much time as it seems, especially when so much needs to be finalized early on. For example, Dini is going to be working with the voice cast of the game this week, which means much of the dialog and major story elements have been locked down. "We're well on our way through production," said Dini. "We're doing recordings all this week here in Los Angeles. I actually have to go over to some of the recordings later this week. It's all sounding great and it's looking terrific."

Unfortunately, Dini was unwilling to give us any details about the story or which characters will be appearing (even though we've made plenty of educated guesses, and Catwoman is prominently displayed on the Game Informer cover).

Batman: Arkham City

He did say, though, that if you're looking for hints at the "Arkham City" story, play through the original game again.

"The more we got into developing the first game, we were like, 'Hey, let's do this. Let's put in this clue for the second one.' At that point we were pretty sure we were doing a sequel at some point."

Dini also spoke about some of the elements that had to be cut from that first game, due to time and budget...elements that could possibly show up in "Arkham City." "There were some ideas we had for the exteriors," explained Dini. "Some fights we would have outside [the asylum] and perhaps a little more Batmobile action."

It sounds like there was a desire to expand the scope of the map of "Arkham Asylum," but certain limitations (it taking place on an island, for example) made that infeasible. For "Arkham City," though, there's a lot more freedom, now that the action has moved into the streets of Gotham City (as evidenced by the first teaser trailer).

For the time being, Dini is definitely keeping his cards close to his vest on anything "Arkham City"-related. Stay tuned, though, as we'll be hearing a lot more about the game when Game Informer drops later this month.

Batman: Arkham City coming to PC, PS3 and 360 in Fall 2011

August 5th, 2010 No comments
The sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum now has an official title -- Batman: Arkham City -- and will launch on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in Fall 2011. There go your fears of deleterious franchise annualization! Of course, we might just go mad waiting so long for the follow-up to one of 2009's best games.

As you may have guessed from a handful of internet domain registrations, the sequel will take place in "Arkham City", a "heavily fortified" mini-city deep inside Gotham City. Warner Bros. Interactive hasn't offered further details on the game's plot or new features, but a pair of gorgeous Game Informer covers (September issue) hint at a more brutal tone and reveal some of the villains Batman may encounter. You'll spot a very patriotic Two-Face, and a possible romantic interest in Catwoman.

The official Batman: Arkham City website is up now, though it only displays the initial teaser trailer from the VGAs at the moment.

Possible Arkham Asylum sequel names dropped in domain registrations

July 12th, 2010 No comments
It appears Warner Bros. went on a little domain-shopping spree for its Batman: Arkham Asylum sequel. Domain digger Superannuation has unearthed over a dozen new registrations by the publisher that reference the Dark Knight or events in the first Arkham Asylum game.

Several of the domain names suggest a range of possible "Arkham" titles for the sequel, including: Arkham City, New Arkham, Rise of Arkham and City of Arkham. There's also one domain that references Warden Sharp and his run for mayor. Avoiding spoilers, if you completed the "Spirit of Arkham" quest line in the first critically acclaimed game, it would seem to be a possible springboard for events in the sequel. We've listed all the new domain names after the break.

‘Batman: Arkham Asylum 2′ Teased In WB URL Registrations

Batman: Arkham Asylum 2

A lot of speculation has already occurred regarding the events of "Batman: Arkham Aslyum 2." For example, we already took a look at the likely villains in the game, mostly culled from the trailer. Warner Bros. just dropped another juicy nugget into our laps, thanks to a series of URLs that the company registered.

As usual, when it comes to intriguing URL registrations, Superannuation was right on top of it, noting that Warner registered the following URLs:

http://whois.domaintools.com/arkhamcity.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmanarkhamcity.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmanashesofgotham.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmanbrokenground.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmannewarkham.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmangranddelusion.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmanriseofarkham.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmansiegeofgotham.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/batmanstateofvillainy.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/cityofarkham.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/closearkhamcity.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/peopleforgotham.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/stopmayorsharp.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/waringothamcity.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/wheresbrucewayne.com

Sounds like the focus of "Arkham 2" will be on a war which takes over a large chunk of Gotham City itself. Sounds like Quincy Sharp, the former warden of Arkham, has mayoral aspirations, but things don't go very smoothly and it's up to Bats to clean up the mess.

I especially like the last URL. Where is Bruce Wayne? He's around town fighting all the villains in a bat su- oh...was that supposed to be a secret?

Warner was mum on "Arkham 2" news during this year's E3, which makes a fall 2011 release for the game more likely. A long time to wait, but when it comes to the follow-up of our 2009 game of the year, there's no rushing quality.

Batman To Face New ‘Arkham Asylum’ DLC?

April 23rd, 2010 No comments

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Rocksteady Studios, who is now owned by Warner Bros., wants to make a "Batman: Arkham Asylum" sequel. They also appear to have more plans for the series' first installment and are looking for skilled workers to help them out with that effort.

"Want to work on DLC for Batman: Arkham Asylum in London? Drop [us] a line," a message sent out by Rocksteady's recruitment agent read, according to CVG. The studio posted an ad back in February announcing their search for a new lead artist, the report states. So you better believe Rocksteady is going to be hard at work with Batman for now while WB's new Montreal offices get set to tackle other DC Comics properties.

Hopefully they haven't allocated all the good remaining villains for "Arkham Asylum 2." I'd love to see a new face or two show up for a new DLC level. Some more Bane action would be perfectly acceptable as well.

There's also a possibility worthy of consideration that the DLC might be for "Arkham Asylum 2" and not the first game if Rocksteady has already begun work on that front. Batman fans obviously won't complain if they're actively assembling both.

Would you like to see some "Arkham Asylum" DLC before the sequel comes out? Who do you want to see show up? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Batman: Arkham Asylum … the action figures!

April 10th, 2010 No comments
Holy late money grab, Batman! It appears that in the June 2010 issue of Toyfare magazine will reveal a cadre of the Batman: Arkham Asylum characters in action figure form (as pointed out by Previews). Though the issue will miss the May release date of Bats' Game of the Year edition, it'll arrive on store shelves by early June.

June's issue is said to feature "a sneak peek at some of 2010's hottest video games and hottest video game toys," including the Dark Knight, among others. The listing also notes that DC Direct, makers of, well, lots of other video game action figures, will apparently be tasked with putting little Bats and crew together. It probably doesn't hurt that the "DC" in DC Direct is of the DC Comics variety, owners of the Batman IP. All will be revealed on June 9, so get your Bat Credit Card at the ready, folks!

Arkham Asylum’s Director Ponders Game Starring … Bane? [Batman]

March 23rd, 2010 No comments
Generally, the reason you adapt a comic book franchise for a video game is because its most recognizable characters help drive its sales. Bane, while familiar to the Batcore, probably doesn't have much of a Q-score with the general public. More »

Rocksteady’s Next DC Comics Project Should Be…

February 25th, 2010 No comments

Justice League of America

The overwhelming success of Rocksteady Studio's latest project, "Batman: Arkham Asylum," proves that the developer can treat an often mishandled comic book property with the respect that it deserves. It took decades of not having a decent game, but The Dark Knight finally got a game worthy of his name, but the same thing can't be said about pretty much everyone else on the DC Comics roster. With Warner Bros.'s recent acquisition of the studio, it leaves room for the possibility of Rocksteady getting their hands on some additional DC properties, and with any luck, hopefully they can do the same thing that they did for Batman with some of these characters.

The Flash

The Flash
What may have been the one good game that Brash Entertainment was working on at the time of their collapse was "The Flash," and he deserves some vindication for that. The Flash's game would find itself at the opposite end of the pacing spectrum from "Arkham Asylum," and it would pose Rocksteady the problem of trying to capture light speed on a grand scale, as well as taking the gameplay out of the confined coziness of an insane asylum and pretty much opening it up to the entire world. Could it be too big for Rocksteady to handle? That's doubtful.

Green Arrow

Green Arrow
Green Arrow seems like he's almost a perfect fit as a follow up to "Arkham Asylum," since the main characters are fairly similar, in that both of them are humans that use their talents and skills instead of possessing super powers to save the world. So, while not as high profile as Batman, Green Arrow seems like it would be a "safe" game for Rocksteady to make, if they didn’t want to venture too far outside of their "Arkham" mold, while at the same time working with a new character, plus replicating the batarang gameplay for Ollie's quiver seems like a nice fit.

Green Lantern

Green Lantern
The Green Lantern Corps. are one of DC's most beloved properties, yet, much like the rest, they have never been represented well in interactive media. A great game wouldn't even have to feature all of them, just Hal Jordan, defending the world. Got that Rocksteady? Hal Jordan defending the world. It's that simple.

Nightwing

Nightwing
Why not make the next game all kinds of confusing and base it on Nightwing? Kind of Batman, kind of Superman, kind of Robin, kind of Power Girl; Nightwing has a surprisingly rich history to pull from, and would offer some nice potential cross-over opportunities for the studio, depending on whether they wanted to set the game pre-Crisis on Infinite Earth or after.

Superman

Superman
The Man of Steel is pretty much a shoe-in for this list, especially since his last outing, "Superman Returns," was barely playable (I know that first hand). It would be great to see how Rocksteady would handle a less traditional storyline for Superman, maybe something like Red Son. Perhaps even seeing them go the extra mile, and take on a story like Frank Miller's The Dark Knight and offer both Bats and Supes as playable characters, letting us play both sides of the story.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman
Much like some of the other names on this list, Princess Diana has made a couple of video game appearances in the past, but nothing has ever lived up to her stature as an Amazon. A character like Wonder Woman would be a perfect fit for Rocksteady, as she has a rich history, as well as an impressive assortment of accessories, complete with invisible jet, which would make for some serious flight sequences if they could incorporate it into the game. Just imagine: "Wonder Woman: The Flight Sim."

Y: The Last Man

Y: The Last Man
I'm well aware that Vertigo is just an imprint of DC, but that's enough for me to make an argument that Y: The Last Man could be Game of the Year if it's done well, which we all know Rocksteady could do. As long as they don't touch the story at all, a game based on Yorick and his monkey Ampersand's adventure around the world to find out how and why they're still alive while all the other males on Earth are dead (as well as find Yorick's lost love) would make for one hell of a wild ride.

Zatanna

Zatanna
For some reason, I could see Zatanna swapped in for Bayonetta, and it still pretty much being the same game, but that would be Platinum's version, not Rocksteady's. If the "Arkham Asylum"'s team were able to have their way with the sorceress, it would be a whole different story; in other words, they probably wouldn't make her game as fast-paced, over-the-top, or hyper-sexed, but I still think there is room for development there, as long as they remember to include the fishnets.

The Groups:
I based this list on the same template as "Arkham Asylum," at least in that the game starred only one character. However, it’s worth mentioning that DC has some of the best team based comics in the industry, and The Justice League of America, The Teen Titans, and The Watchmen (that's right, I went there) have all had games released under their monikers, but have never, ever gotten what they deserve when it comes to video games. Developing a multi-character game would be a challenge for the studio; I think it's one that they would welcome, and ultimately, overcome.

‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ Developer Bought By Warner Bros.

February 23rd, 2010 No comments

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Warner Bros, knowing a good thing when they see one, has decided to buy a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios. You undoubtedly know Rocksteady's work as the developer of last year's Game of the Year (at least according to me), "Batman: Arkham Asylum."

The news isn't exactly a huge shock. "Arkham Asylum" did tremendously well, both critically and commercially, and a new sequel is already on the way. Also, unlike the first game, which Warner published jointly with Eidos, "Arkham Asylum 2" is going to be handled solely by Warner Bros, which probably isn't very interested in sharing the wealth of a successful franchise with its competitors.

So what does this mean for you? Well, hopefully giving the publisher more power won't cause the next "Arkham Asylum" game to be rushed to store shelves, but at the very least we can probably expect more DC franchise games to come out of Rocksteady. After they complete "Arkham 2," that is.
