Hey,
Mad Dog McCree: Gunslinger Pack, there's a new sheriff in town -- the "town" in this case being the set of "Collections of Three Laserdisc Games on Wii." Digital Leisure and publisher Destineer are partnering to release Dragon's Lair Trilogy on Wii this fall.
Despite the name, the "Trilogy" is only two-thirds
Dragon's Lair: in addition to
Dragon's Lair and
Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp, the disc will include
Space Ace. And for those of you who want to watch the remastered animation, but who
firmly insist that these aren't video games, you can remove any vestige of interactivity and just enjoy the games in "Watch Mode."
The collection will retail for $30, which is relatively good news for
this guy.

Virtual Play Games unearthed a collection of ancient relics, believed to have been called "Intellivision games" in their time. To allow modern audiences to examine these historical artifacts for themselves, Virtual Play has built a mobile exhibition called
Intellivision Lives!, which requires only a Nintendo DS for admission. In other words, the publisher's putting a bunch of old games on a DS cartridge and selling it this September.
The collection includes classics like
Astro Smash, Armor Battle, Night Stalker and
Shark! Shark! (a precursor of
Flow), as well as six
unreleased games, for a total of 60 titles from Mattel's console. The DS touchscreen substitutes for the Intellivision controller's number pad, with an image of each game's custom controller
overlay!
The last we heard of this project, it had been
banished from DSiWare. It'll finally be out (as a cartridge-based game) this September, and we'll get a chance to play ... these games that have been out since 1982.

New York City playwright Leegrid Stevens, working with the Theater for New City and manager Danielle Karliner, will debut a new play titled "The Dudleys!" this August at the Joyce and Seward Johnson Theater. "What in the world does this have to do with games?" you may be asking your computer. First and foremost, it's straight up
weird that you're speaking to a computer. More importantly, though, "The Dudleys" is a play about the thoughts and memories of a young man, conveyed through "a malfunctioning 8-bit video game." You see the connection now?
Apparently, the play will feature chiptune music created on Ataris, GameBoys, and Commodore 64s, and 8-bit art will back up the actors. More specifically, the play aims to juxtapose "the two dimensional side-scrolling world of fun and happy endings up against the confusion and aimlessness of real life." Well then! If you're interested in snagging tickets, they're available
online for $15.

The early Sega Genesis roguelike
Fatal Labyrinth was released on PC download services last week, but Sega doesn't appear to be done re-releasing it yet. The ESRB listing for the game shows, in addition to its existing PC and Wii (Virtual Console) releases, plans for Mac, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
Fatal Labyrinth is actually already available on PS3 and Xbox, as part of
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, but a separate ESRB listing for those platforms suggests a standalone downloadable release, like those given to games like
Gunstar Heroes, Sonic & Knuckles, and
Phantasy Star II. Good news for those of you who don't want to spend around twenty dollars for the
fantastic deal that is the
Ultimate Genesis Collection.

First I want to write that this came out in November, so if you see it and scream at me because it’s ‘old,’ I don’t care. I’ve talked to several people who use Gmail, many of them in the videogame industry, and they have yet to see this. So I decided to share it with all of you.
If you log into your Gmail account and select the themes tab, and find the ‘High Score’ theme. If you select it, your email will now look like a 8-bit game from the past. What’s even cooler is when it’s the daytime, the top part will show a sun; however, once night fills the actual sky, a moon along with stars will cover your Gmail. But that’s not all.
If you check out the left hand corner where the chat icon is, you’ll notice that it looks like an arcade cabinet. If you choose to chat with someone, a cabinet will appear on the right side, along with a quick animation of a retro-like game on the screen. As you can tell, I’m telling Peter from /film how I feel about him. Also, if you check out the little color icons that let you know if people are online, busy, or offline, now have a Space Invaders look to them.

Overall, I love the look and have officially switched my theme… for good.

It would appear that
Haunted House marked the beginning of a new series of revamped Atari classics.
Siliconera spotted GameFly listings for PS3 and Xbox 360 games called "
Star Raiders" and "
Centipede."
Centipede, of course, is one of the most well-known early arcade games, featuring a trackball-controlled avatar firing lasers at on-screen centipedes and mushrooms.
Star Raiders isn't as well known. It's a first-person,
Star Trek-style space exploration and combat simulator released on various Atari computers -- as well as on Atari 2600, where it used the "
Video Touch Pad" controller.
The fact that these are on Gamefly suggests that they're retail releases -- since Gamefly doesn't rent downloadable games.

Artist Roger Ibars wired one hundred different game controllers -- from the familiar to the obscure -- to travel alarm clocks, creating a series of wonderfully impractical devices. While we can't buy our own (it used to be possible to buy a
similar device, but they're hard to find now), we can all enjoy the beautiful photographs Ibars took. It's a collection not only of his art, but of the collected works of game and peripheral companies over 30 years.
Ibars granted Joystiq (the natural home for art about
joysticks) permission to share a selection of high-resolution images with you, which you can find in our gallery below. It's going to be really sad if Kinect makes controllers obsolete, because future galleries will just include blank spaces with tiny alarm clocks in the background.

Atari is
finally bringing back its classic
Haunted House franchise for a new XBLA, downloadable PC, and Wii (presumably WiiWare) game. For those of you who
aren't ancient,
Haunted House is a maze game about a kid exploring a mysterious mansion in order to put an urn back together, hindered both by aggressive ghosts and total inability to see items or exits without lighting a match.
The new version benefits from 29 years of technological advancement by, among other things, displaying the player avatar as a person instead of simply disembodied cartoon eyes. The gameplay still involves avoiding ghosts and looking for pieces of a broken urn, but now also includes puzzles, bosses, and what sounds like a much larger environment than the original house, with "towers, basements and catacombs."
The new
Haunted House will be out in September, and you can see a spooky trailer after the break. Now that Atari's started remaking its old games again, what's next?
Circus Atari for Kinect? It would make more sense than that other
Kinect circus thing.

Just in time for
Sonic's birthday, high-end figure company First 4 Figures is taking pre-orders on a new statue of the hedgehog hero's occasional Chaos Emerald-infused Super Saiyan form, Super Sonic. The figure depicts Super Sonic in the "classic" Genesis-era art style, sparking across a platform in
Sonic 2's Chemical Plant Zone.
If you want to buy one of these 15-inch-tall figures, you'll have to dig up some Chaos Emeralds or other precious materials of your own. Two versions will ship in the first quarter next year:
one for $140 and a
deluxe version that lights up for twenty dollars more.

Super Mario Crossover was already a miracle, faithfully dropping protagonists from
Contra, Mega Man, Castlevania, Zelda and
Metroid into
Super Mario Bros. A teaser trailer (that's right, a trailer for a Flash game!) after the break heralds the arrival of another NES-era champion: the wall-climbing, statue-hunting ninja in the sleeveless uniform,
Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa. Ryu brings his wall-climbing ability from his NES games, as well as the shuriken and boomerang-style Windmill Shuriken weapons.
Now we'll get to see how powerful Ryu can be in a game free of heat-seeking birds! Or, we'll get to see that whenever creator Jay Pavlina actually makes the new version of
Crossover available.
