Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night debuts on App Store

July 22nd, 2010 No comments
Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night is now available in North America. Unlike the last bizarre, potentially embarrassing Castlevania spinoff, Judgment, nobody has to see you buy it, thanks to digital distribution!

"With a timeless flagship title like Castlevania, it was essential to maintain the integrity of the franchise, while at the same time offering updated content to consumers," said Joe Morris, Konami's Vice President of Mobile Content and Social Networking, about the game that retells the events of the most beloved Castlevania game, Symphony of the Night, as a falling-block puzzler. If you want to find out for yourself how well this complete departure maintains the franchise's integrity, the game costs $5.

Watch this Ghost Trick footage, for dog’s sake

July 22nd, 2010 No comments
Snippets of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective footage went up on various outlets, mostly focusing on a sequence in which Sissel has to save a young girl named Kamilla from the game's nearly-blind assassin. Sissel is assisted in this task by Missile, Kamilla's dog -- who, like Sissel, has recently been killed by the assassin. Sissel rewinds time, and the two have to work together to get Kamilla in a safe hiding place before the killer arrives.

After the break, see a clip from GameVideos in which Sissel and Missile manipulate Kamilla through the use of donuts. Find more at IGN and GameSpot (who has a clip of Missile's fateful showdown).

PopCap rolling out Zuma Blitz on Facebook

July 15th, 2010 No comments
Hot on the heels of PopCap stating that social features would be added to all its existing games, the company has announced Zuma Blitz for Facebook. Zuma Blitz is "expected to roll out gradually" in three weeks with a beta. The company will update the app with weekly tournaments, new levels, an 'experience points' system to unlock features and "a 'treasure chest' virtual currency-based system for obtaining in-game power-ups."

Zuma Blitz is PopCap's second "full-fledged" Facebook game. The casual e-crack developer previously released Bejeweled Blitz, which, according to PopCap, has had nearly 30 million players and 100 million sessions daily since being introduced 18 months ago.

Professor Layton’s future unwinds on September 12

July 14th, 2010 No comments
Professor Layton has figured out the secrets of time travel! Though his new game, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, was originally set to be released in North America on September 20, the clever adventurer has figured out a way to move the release date back in time one week, to September 12.

Unwound Future begins with Professor Layton receiving a letter from his apprentice, Luke -- from ten years in the future. Layton and Luke must travel to the London of the future for urgent puzzle-related business. Apparently, sending someone through time is easier than some of the puzzles.

Meet the detectives of Disney Guilty Party

July 14th, 2010 No comments
They're not exactly an intimidating bunch -- we've got a masked brat, a soft-spoken granny and a let-himself-go gumshoe in here -- but the investigative attendees of Disney Guilty Party look like they can crack a case and hook some crooks with flair on August 31. See the new trailer after the break.

Time for a bit more of the Portal 2 E3 demo

June 30th, 2010 No comments
Portal 2
Valve's agonizing piecemeal delivery of footage from the Portal 2 E3 demo continues. These clips introduce Pneumatic Diversity Vents and Thermal Discouragement Beams, because simply creating conduits between two points in space (four in co-op) wasn't complicated enough.

Sure, those are just vacuums and lasers, respectively, but it's still enough to give us a headache in anticipation of future gameplay complexity. Luckily, no space-bending guns are required to see the videos -- simply click past the post break and they'll go directly into your eyes.

Preview: Clash of Heroes HD (multiplayer)

June 22nd, 2010 No comments
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes on PSN and XBLA is pretty much what it sounds like: last year's DS game in high definition on consoles. For me, that alone is enough to ensure a purchase, because I'd make a hobby out of purchasing that delightful game if I could. Similarly, the new online (or offline) multiplayer component in Capy's remake of the DS puzzle RPG is, precisely, the Clash of Heroes gameplay, adapted for more players. Which is enough.

Preview: Ivy the Kiwi?

June 20th, 2010 No comments
For some reason, I thought of Prope's Ivy the Kiwi? as a mellow title, a generally relaxing and lightweight game -- at least that's what I thought before actually playing the game. To my surprise, I was presented with a challenging, often chaotic arcade game instead of a frothy, low-impact diversion. It's just the kind of game I seek out, actually -- a game whose challenge comes from mastering a single, unique gameplay mechanic.

de Blob 2: The Underground rolls out on PS3, 360, Wii and DS in Spring 2011

June 14th, 2010 No comments
As THQ CEO Brian Farrell indicated in February, de Blob's amorphous antics will be spreading to multiple platforms in de upcoming sequel, de Blob 2: the Underground. THQ has announced that de game will launch in Spring 2011 on de Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and DS. The move to HD consoles will also enable support for 3D, just in case you felt that Blob's paint-splattering antics should extend beyond your screen and into your living room.

THQ also noted that de Blob would make further appearances through a partnership with the Syfy channel and additional "de Blob-branded consumer products." Like ... squishy de Blob stress balls? You can have that one for free, THQ.
