From a Japanese game developer saying that the Japanese industry was "finished" to lower attendance, last year's Tokyo Game Show was disastrous. This year can only go up.
Hopefully.
This year's TGS is the 20th Tokyo Game Show, and organizers have announced "a new midterm vision of becoming 'The No.1 Information Network in the Asian Region' and 'The World's Largest Event!'"
Okay, the first one sounds doable. Maybe. But the second one?
As part of its goal, this year's Tokyo Game Show will feature a beefed up PC area, gadget area, mobile phone area and kiddy area. Because today's kids are tomorrow's adults or something.
And this year, the private business-only days have been opened up somewhat. Business day tickets will go on sale to those in the game industry who register in advance. This is a change as in previous years, business days were invite only.

There are many PSP colors. Loads. And apparently, there will be one less.
According to a Japanese retail blog, the "bright yellow" PSP-3000 will not longer be shipped to shops. Released in 2009, it seems that the color is one of the least popular PSP-3000 colors, if not the least popular.
That probably means it won't be missed!

The 2010 World Cup draws near, and that means one thing: football. OK, two things: football, and an EA Sports football game cashing in on the World Cup.
World Cup 2010 is essentially FIFA 10 with a focus on national teams, the reduction in available sides hopefully compensated for by an increase in polish and incidental detail, making the most of that expensive FIFA World Cup license.
It'll be out in April, for the 360, PS3, Wii and PSP.

The people at Tecmo Games, makers of Ninja Gaiden, the next Metroid, Dead or Alive and the forthcoming Dead or Alive Paradise are in on the joke — or the fact? — about their customers' use of their products.
Not all of Tecmo's games feature women who are practically falling out of their bikinis, jumping up and down so that their breasts bounce as much as unrealistically possible. (Surely, Metroid: Other M will not!) But to promote one that has such features, Tecmo is going with the Okay-our-customers-masturbate-to-this-game angle.
The video above is part of that promotional effort.
At least they're not being coy. Honesty in advertising?

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sony will release a new smart phone "capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games" later this year, as well as a competitor to Apple's iPad that may also play PSone titles.
The Journal notes that the original PlayStation game-playing smart phone is being developed by Sony and mobile handset manufacturer Sony Ericsson. That's a story that we've heard plenty of times before in various incarnations, but with declining PSP sales, a cool reception to the digital download-only PSPgo, and increasing competition from iPhone and iPod gaming, the timing sounds logical.
Sony's other device that "blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PlayStation Portable," according to the Wall Street Journal, is targeted for a 2010 launch.

Bill Murray was on Letterman the other night and got talking Ghostbusters. Then he got talking the recent Ghostbusters game. I had to watch it four times to catch it all, so dazzled was I by that shirt.
Watch the clip and you'll hear how much he loved the experience of getting back into the character of Dr Peter Venkman while recording for the game. I'm glad he did, because Venkman's lifeless voice work was probably the most disappointing aspect of the entire game for me, especially when placed next to the amazing job Dan Aykroyd did with Ray Stanz.
Still, it's always nice listening to Bill Murray, seeing as his public appearances are so few and far between. Then again, judging by his attire, there might be a reason for that.

Steven Spielberg, filmmaker and part-time game designer, plans to make a live action version of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell futuristic cop manga. Scribe Laeta Kalogridis is hard at work on the screenplay.
At a recent Q&A for Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island (she wrote the script), Kalogridis revealed that she'll "turn in a draft in a few weeks". According to website ANN, the screenwriter was cautiously optimistic about the Hollywood adaptation, adding, "Cross your fingers, guys — [it has a] female lead."
"I can say that Ghost in the Shell was a seminal visual experience," she told UGO.com last month. "It has spawned so much amazing — not just direct stuff, like the television series — but The Matrix and the evolution of cyberpunk. For me, it is an meaningful as [William Gibson's] Neuromancer."
DreamWorks has the film rights to Ghost in the Shell and plans on making the film in 3D. Kalogridis, who executive produced Avatar, replaced writer Jamie Moss, who had joined the project in 2008.
Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989 and then turned into an anime in 1995, a animated feature sequel and two television anime. Since then it has also been made into games for the PlayStation, PS2 and PSP.
