Proteus brings natural, pixelated beauty to PS3, Vita this fall

July 1st, 2013 No comments
Proteus headed to PS3, Vita this fall
Proteus, the award-winning exploration experiment, will join the growing list of indies gracing PS3 and Vita this fall. Curve Studios, developer of Stealth Bastard Deluxe, is working with developers Ed Key and David Kanaga to bring Proteus to Sony's platforms. Proteus launched on PC and Mac in January (and later on Linux).

Proteus offers a procedurally generated universe of exploration and is, in a sense, the epitome of an indie game. It's a beautiful world backlit by a soothing yet energetic soundtrack that the player creates as he explores all four seasons of a pastel island. It's a digital, on-screen experience that conveys just as much about the grandeur of nature as a real-life camp out. It's experimental and it has no classic "game" elements: no score, no leaderboards, no checkpoints.

"Here at Curve we've been working with Ed to make the PS Vita and PS3 versions even better than the original, and over the next few months we're going to have more information on how we're using the power of PS3 and PS Vita to bring the absolute best Proteus experience to you guys," Curve Marketing Manager Rob Clarke writes on the PlayStation Blog.

If you can't wait for Proteus on PS3 or Vita, it's available for $10 now on Steam, and supports Big Picture mode.

The Last of Us holds off Minecraft in this week’s UK charts

July 1st, 2013 No comments
The Last of Us survives as the UK No. 1 this week after seeing off an attack from Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, which crept up to make a No. 2 debut. So that's three weeks in a row for the Naughty Dog gripper, making it one of only a trio of games this year to achieve the feat, the other two being Dead Island: Riptide and BioShock Infinite.

The country's welcome for a physical edition of Minecraft puts the block on Animal Crossing: New Leaf staying in second place, although the cuddly sim only has to move one door down to third. There's even more moving about going on further down the road, since Minecraft is one of four new releases in the UK top ten this week.

Putting more Simoleons into the kitty is Sims 3 expansion pack Island Paradise, which washes up in fifth. Drifting just behind in sixth is Deadpool, while strategy sequel Company of Heroes 2 forms the last line of defense in tenth spot.

Total Recoil gets its ass to PS Vita July 9

UK indie developer Eiconic Games is preparing a new twin-stick shooter for the PS Vita on July 9 called Total Recoil. The premise is simple: Shoot everything. Shoot all the things.

Total Recoil is already available on iOS 5.0 and greater as a free download, in case you're looking for an idea of what to expect from the PS Vita game; however, the PS Vita port has additional features like rear touchpad controls for missiles, allowing players to trace their flight path. When a killstreak bonus is achieved, players can use the front touch-screen to control the support plane.

Unfortunately, Eiconic Games doesn't reveal pricing in the PlayStation Blog announcement post.

Retro JRPG Soul Saga funded, PS4 & Vita stretch goal added

Retro JRPG Soul Saga funded, PS4 & Vita stretch goals added and imminent
Soul Saga, Disastercake's self-described love letter to PSOne JRPGs, rocketed past its Kickstarter goal of $60,000 yesterday. A funding surge this week saw the game, now already confirmed for PC, Mac, and Linux, approach the cusp of its Wii U stretch goal of $80,000, which is now extended to also include PS4 and Vita following successful talks with Sony.

At the time of writing, Soul Saga sits at around $77,000 with 16 days of its fundraiser left to go, so the additional platforms stretch goal is on its last HP. Voice acting is confirmed after its required amount was cleared, while stretch goals further down the line include airship exploration "similar to Skies of Arcadia," a job board, and legendary weapons. The top goal is set at $250,000 and if cleared transforms the game, which is being positioned as the 20-hour first entry in a series, into something with "double the story and content."
