iPod Touch accounts for 38 percent of iPhone-compatible devices

September 6th, 2010 No comments

Using a bit of clever math, app maker and market analyst firm Asymco has determined that about 38 percent of all 120 million reported iOS device sales are iPod Touches.

The company got the value by subtracting the 59.6 million iPhones and 3.2 million iPads sold through June (figures presented in Apple’s SEC filings) and the estimated July and August iPad and iPhone sales of 12 million — a combined 74.8M iPads and iPhones sold to date — from the 120 million total iOS devices that have been sold to date. The 120 million figure was announced in Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ seemingly annual presentation of new Apple gear on Wednesday.

Jobs said the iPod Touch had become the number one mobile gaming platform — above the Nintendo DS and Sony Playstation portable — during the same presentation. Apple sold 9.41 million iPods in the quarter ending June 26.

It looks to be in an even better position to advance into the portable gaming market with some new hardware. The new iPod Touch boasts Apple’s A4 processor, as well as a gyroscope, and front- and rear-facing camera. Apple will also release iOS 4.1 sometime this week, which brings the Game Center — a multiplayer gaming platform for iOS — live.

Sony’s List of Games at the Tokyo Game Show, The Last Guardian a No Show?

September 2nd, 2010 No comments

Sony has just released what we should expect from them at the Tokyo Game Show. What’s not surprising is the company will relentlessly try to push the PlayStation Move and its 3D technology. Obviously, the way they publicize this is by showing off their exclusive videogames that will appear on their systems that take advantage of both features.

Like you would imagine, Sony is highlighting the franchise titles like LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5 and SOCOM 4; however one title is noticeably absent from the list — The Last Guardian.

The Last Guardian has been under pretty much every hardcore gamer’s radar as a project to watch out for, and for good reason. The game is being developed by the ultra talented Team Ico studio, the makers behind such works of art as Ico and Shadow of Colossus. Not only that, when the first trailer leaked on the Internet just days before the unveiling at E3, the buzz about the title has been enormous and never ending.

Of course, not much as been shown since the first time we were in awe of the venture. The game’s designer Fumito Ueda had made numerous claims that we would be getting a lot more info about The Last Guardian in 2010 and since TGS is the last big convention of the year, most of us thought that must be the time we finally get to see the game in action. But as of now, we won’t because the game is not listed as a Sony game that is expected to be displayed during the show. Although, that could change and hopefully it does!

After the jump, check out what games will be shown, thanks to andriasang.

Konami has just released what games will be at the Tokyo Game Show this October. All you Metal Gear fans can rest easy because Metal Gear Solid: Rising will have a presence at the show. Some other notable games that will be at the convention are Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Zack & Ombrea and Catherine, which is developed my Atlus.

After the jump, check out what Konami titles will be at the show.

Four Men Arrested for Stealing 219 Games from Toys “R” Us

    September 1st, 2010 No comments

Four New York City have been arrested for conspiring by stealing videogames from Toys “R” Us’ up and down the East Coast. Rodney McCreary, Derrella Winfrey, Gilberto Matos and Wilfredo Matos were caught by an off-duty officer, who saw the suspects stuffing their pants with videogames inside a Toys “R” Us in Annapolis, MD.

Once the men left the store, the cop followed them to their car and called on-duty law-enforcement to apprehend the men. The police searched the vehicle and to their surprise, found 219 games and a long list of other Toys “R” US’ and a map detailing how to get to reach them.

According to HomeTownAnnapolis, the police are now investigating which stores were hit, while each of the the four men have been released on a $50,000 bond.

Believe it or not, something like this is not uncommon. When thieves have confidence on how a particular retail corporation works, they will rob as many as they can — especially if they ‘know’ they can’t be caught by store employees. The officer was just at the right place at the right time. Imagine if he wasn’t there, these guys would still be traveling around the area and looting the remaining stores on their map.

Pre-Order Bonuses Revealed for WWE SmackDown Vs. Raw 2011

    August 31st, 2010 No comments

THQ has revealed specifics of what to expect when WWE SmackDown Vs. Raw 2011 is pre-ordered. Like other titles, where you reserve the game, is what you get. Here’s the scoop:

    * Best Buy (or any retailer in Canada): Brett Hart playable character
    * Toys R Us: Undertaker’s “Ministry of Darkness” gear
    * Amazon.com: Three outfits for Randy Orton (T-shirt, suit and referee uniform)
    * Walmart: “Tribute to the Troops” arena

I would probably pick the Best Buy option. Although, I wonder if it’s the Brett Hart of yesteryear, or the modern, fat, slow, old version of Brett Hart.

Image for God of War: Ghost of Sparta PSP Theme Released

    August 31st, 2010 No comments

Sony has just released images for their God of War: Ghost of Sparta themed PSP. The look of the actual PSP is pretty badass, but the Darth Vader inspired PSP still is number one in my heart.

The PSP is actually packed in with a Ghost of Sparta bundle, which includes:

    * Black and Red Two-Toned PSP-3000

    * God of War: Ghost of Sparta UMD Game– After God of War concludes, Ghost of Sparta begins with the story of Kratos’ ascension to power as the God of War.

    * God of War: Chains of Olympus PlayStation Network Downloadable Game Voucher – Before the events of God of War, experience Kratos’ journey during the 10-years of servitude to the Gods of Olympus in one of the most highly acclaimed action titles of all time!

    * Kick Ass – UMD Movie (Wait, they still make these?)

    * 2 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo

Angry Birds Coming to the PS3 and PSP

    August 25th, 2010 No comments

    Angry Birds for PSP

The most popular iPhone/iTouch game, Angry Birds, is headed to the PlayStation 3 and PSP. Today, it announced that the puzzle game will be a available to download “soon” according to the official PlayStation blog, and the visuals will be fully optimized for the PSP.

Since it was released on the iPhone last December, it has gone on to sell 6.5 million units and it is still consistently a top seller on Apple’s App Store. Because of the popularity, the developer, Rovio, has ported the title to various other phones and has seen the same type of success.

The game is simple and the story is foolish — but in a humorous way. The Angry Birds have noticed that their eggs have been snatched by green pigs. The Birds want their revenge and attach themselves to a giant catapult which launches them the air, causing destruction.

The player chooses the speed and direction of each bird, while calculating each birds strengths and weaknesses, and shoots them into the air causing structures to fall and hoping to land on a pig. While it’s a simple concept and feels a lot like Boom Blox for the WIi, it’s easily one of the more addictive games you’ll play.

    Sega Registers Valkyria3.jp

    August 23rd, 2010 No comments

    Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles II might be heading to the PSP later in the month, but that hasn’t stopped Sega from registering the URL valkyria3.jp, which would suggest Sega is at the very least, thinking on making the series a trilogy.

If you’re a hardcore role-playing gamer and are already making plans to head down to your local GameStop to reserve it, let me bring you back down to Earth for a bit. While I’m sure Sega would love to develop a third game for the series, I wouldn’t jump to a conclusion just yet. This could be nothing more than Sega protecting its assets and if they ever do decide release a Valkyria III, than they already have a web address to promote it.

If this does happen, as VG247 points out, could Sega please develop it on the PlayStation 3, as opposed to the PSP?

Pac-Man is Evolving in 2010, But How?

    May 5th, 2010 No comments

    pac-mans evolution

Gonintendo has just received this picture in their email, which teases the idea that Namco Bandai has made the decision to not only release a new Pac-Man game, but also change the look of the famous yellow head.

I have no clue what direction the company plans on taking Pac-Man, but I believe it’s gonna be more than a simplistic 2D version. If you analyze the picture, it’s not just showing Pac-Man in every makeover, but also his evolution in gaming.

The picture in the far left shows him in his original 2D form, which most of us think of when we think of ‘The Pac.’ However, in the mid-90s he was re-imagined and while it was the same type of game as the original, it was played in 3D environment, which is represented in the second picture to the left. The third picture was his platform genre debut. Namco decided it was a good idea to bring a mixture of Super Mario 64, which was the craze back then.

So what does this mean for the next game? What could Pac-Man possibly star in that would be so drastically different than the rest? Well, I hear Nintendo is set to announce a 3D DS

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Dated for Oct. 26th

    May 4th, 2010 No comments

    star wars the force unleased

LucasArts has confirmed the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be sold in stores on October 26th for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PSP and the DS. The release date was announced on the videogame’s official Facebook status, which reads: “May The Fourth be with you, since it will be Unleashed Oct 26th, 2010!”

Once again Star Wars fanatics will play as Starkiller, the apprentice of Darth Vader, and will be told during Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Sadly, nothing else is much known about the title since it was first shown at the Video Game Awards last summer. With E3 right around the corner, it safe to assume LucasArts will blow-the-lid off the next installment during the annual show.

I’m super excited to see what the team can do with the sequel. When the first game was released in 2008, I thought the story was easily one of the best in the history of gaming, and actually might have had a better concept than some of the newer Star Wars films. The downside of the title was ultimately the gameplay — which is…well…importent. While definitely not bad, it was just riddled with glitches and some animations problems, which at times took the player out of the terrific atmosphere which the developers had obviously spent a lot of time on.

Hopefully this time around, the team focuses on the actual mechanics of the game, as much as they do with the story. If so, it could one of the better games of the 2010.
