Guild Wars surpasses 6.5 million sales, sequel will be released ‘when it’s done’

August 31st, 2010 No comments
As Guild Wars 2 preps for its US hands-on debut at PAX this weekend, we followed up with NCsoft about the current state of the series. The publisher informed us that the original Guild Wars has now sold over 6.5 million units. Roughly half of those copies found homes in Europe, with Germany making up the largest fan base, which is why the publisher debuted hands-on gameplay for the sequel at this year's Gamescom.

As for Guild Wars 2's speculated release window, NCsoft is taking the Blizzard approach to the game's launch status and saying "when it's done." A representative for the company told us an MMO -- even one like Guild Wars 2 that is going down a different path -- can't be released nowadays until it's finished. It's a lesson NCsoft learned harshly through Tabula Rasa. Hopefully the eventual launch of Guild Wars 2 will wipe the slate clean of that painful memory.

Final Fantasy XIV open beta postponed due to ‘critical bugs’

August 31st, 2010 No comments
No arrow, blade or strongest Firaga seems to be capable of ridding the online world of Final Fantasy XIV from its most daunting foes -- the dreaded "critical bugs." Square Enix announced earlier today that the game's open beta testing, which was scheduled to start later today, will be postponed in all regions due to the discovery of these vexing critters.

No new timetable was placed on the open beta testing -- we suppose that depends on how long it takes Square to vanquish the errors that are apparently plaguing the client. We'll let you know as soon as there's more information.

[Thanks, Nick]

Playdom kills off almost all Acclaim games

August 30th, 2010 No comments
In a move that no adoption agency would ever endorse, Playdom has basically killed off Acclaim just a few months after acquiring it, as Gamasutra reports. Acclaim's site says that all of its online games have been shut down as of August 26 and unused "Acclaim Coins" are being refunded. A couple of games, Kogamu and RockFREE, will continue to live on under the Playdom banner.

Playdom was bought a month ago by Disney which apparently had little interest in continuing to support Acclaim titles like 9Dragons. Though we can't claim to be big fans of any of their MMOs -- and can't really say we know anyone who fits that description -- it does seem kind of a jarring way to leave consumers.

Final Fantasy XIV open beta begins August 31

August 27th, 2010 No comments
If you weren't one of the chosen few who managed to weasel their way into the game's closed beta test, your first chance to log a few hours into Final Fantasy XIV will come next week. Square Enix announced through the game's official forums that open beta servers will go live next Tuesday, August 31 at 7 p.m. PDT.

Though the forum post explains that servers will be live 24 hours a day, only a set number of players will be able to log on at one time. This number will gradually increase as Square Enix tests out its server loads, but in the mean time, players who get turned away will be placed on a waiting list. Just think of it like you're waiting in line to gain access to a hip, happening night club, only ... um, it's the exact polar opposite.

Final Fantasy XIV ‘Answers’ trailer asks some truly bizarre questions

August 27th, 2010 No comments
Regardless of whether or not you're looking forward to Final Fantasy XIV, you really owe it to yourself to watch the new trailer posted after the jump. Not because it reveals the game's theme song ("Answers," as performed by pretty-voiced vocalist Susan Calloway), and not because it contains a few relatively rad cutscenes from the game, but because it features some of the most mind-blowingly insane writing to ever come out of the franchise. And that's saying something.

"These tears," the trailer posits. "Mankind's fated burden? A gods-decreed sacrifice?" Whoa, there, trailer! "Radiant glory? Or heinous oblivion?" We don't know how to answer that, trailer. The second one, we guess? We're not entirely sure what you're asking.

Rockman Online is a side-scrolling online game that mashes up the Mega Man and Mega Man X worlds. It's also only being released in South Korea. Luckily, then, this anime-style teaser video is cool enough for us to enjoy as a standalone work, because for us, it might as well be!

Hello Kitty Online launches, opens fourth seal of the Apocalypse

August 26th, 2010 No comments
And lo, from the throne of four and twenty seats, with four and twenty elders sitting and clothed in white rainments and crowns of gold, lightnings and thunderings and voices proceeded. Seven lamps of fire burned, and four beings full of eyes appeared in front and behind. And the first being was like a frog, and the second being like a nymph, and the third being had the face of a man, and the fourth being was like a yawning penguin.

And from the mouth of the third being, like a cat, came these words: "Hello Kitty Online has officially launched in North America and Europe. Fans both young and old can share their love of Hello Kitty, either through the free downloadable client or the Premium Edition retail version, which is available at retailers for $19.99 and contains $15 in Sanrio Cash Points, a game DVD and manual, and one of four exclusive and cute virtual pets."

And I looked, and beheld the pale cat, and the name that sat on her was Hello Kitty. And Hell followed with them.

APB has 130K registered players, high average playtime and revenue per user

August 25th, 2010 No comments
Realtime Worlds as a company has been suffering from all kinds of problems lately, but how's the game doing? With a very short press release, the company (currently "in administration," which is the British version of bankruptcy) has announced that APB is hosting 130,000 registered players. That's actually not too bad for a brand new MMO -- while real population numbers are often hard to come by, the most recent estimates would have the game beating Star Trek Online's current active base. And STO has actually done pretty well, considering how tough it is to start up a new MMO.

Realtime Worlds still isn't home and dry, though. At 130K players, APB is just barely doing better than Tabula Rasa at its peak, and we all know how well that turned out. And APB's model means player registrations isn't necessarily a sign of good health. While the press release claims that the average player is playing four hours a day and the average paying player is spending $28 a month, APB's unlimited free social hours and the ability to "spend" in-game points rather than real money could be twisting those figures upwards a bit. Our colleagues at Massively also point out that while Star Trek Online was created relatively cheaply, APB's creation was reportedly much messier and more costly.

Still, with a dark cloud over the rest of Realtime Worlds' affairs, they might as well grab a silver lining where they can. If the company survives this launch, APB could have enough of a player base to make itself profitable.

Why the PC Version of Final Fantasy XIV Ships First

August 24th, 2010 No comments

Final_Fantasy_XIV_Online

Final Fantasy XIV is going to have some fantastic features. So much so, that Square-Enix has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 has hit some developmental snags because of the size of the game. Because of that, the game’s producer Hiromichi Tanaka, has reasoned why there will be a six month gap between the PC release and the PlayStation.

Come this September, gamers can by the 14th installment of the famed franchise, while PS3 owners have to wait until March 2011. “The main reason was the memory,” Tanaka told VG24 through a translator. “On the PC, they have enormous memory. For PS3, there’s a restriction.”

Although he didn’t detail what he meant by memory because that could range anywhere from RAM to the HDD, he did say the studio is working diligently to resolve the problem.

They are adjusting the memory size and customizing it; it took longer then we were expecting,” he explained. “But we’re really working hard to bring it out as soon as possible.”

I find it intriguing that the company is going to launch the PC version of the game first, and wait for the PlayStation 3 to arrive months later. I understand Square-Enix looks at how well the PC market responds to an MMO, especially when compared to the consoles. However, this title is a little different. Unlike say, World of Warcraft, which the franchise already had an established PC fan-base and was one of the pivotal reason for its success, Final Fantasy doesn’t have that luxury. I just think by the time the game arrives next year for the PlayStation 3, the hype, however large that is, will be gone.

This makes me wonder what the future of gaming is going to be like. Both Sony and Microsoft have stated that they want this generation of systems to run longer than ever before. If that happens, and all the signs are pointing to that it will, will games start to appear on the PC first because the developer’s imagination will exceed the limitations of home consoles? It appears that this specific gap between the PC and PS3 version could be the start of something.
