Cosplayers will compete at Tokyo Game Show’s ‘Metal Gear Cosplay Camp’

August 24th, 2010 No comments
Start looking for a really nice cardboard box! And then ship yourself to Japan in it. Konami is holding a Metal Gear Solid cosplay contest next month, with the winner to be determined at the Tokyo Game Show.

Interested Johnny Sasaki lookalikes (and other Metal Gear cosplayers) can submit pictures here (warning: Japanese-language application!) Konami will select a few of the entries to appear at the publisher's TGS booth on September 18. There, they will be evaluated by a panel of guest judges to be announced later -- as well as the TGS attendees in general, who know a thing or two about dressing up.

The most difficult thing about Metal Gear cosplay is that if you're too accurate, you'll be too stealthy for the judges to notice.

Kojima on Metal Gear Solid 3′s clandestine origins and bright future

July 7th, 2010 No comments
We were all surprised to see a Metal Gear Solid demo for 3DS. Probably not as surprised, however, as the Kojima Productions staff who didn't know it was being developed. In a Famitsu interview (translated by Andriasang), Hideo Kojima described how, after the completion of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, he secretly assigned a small number of staffers to the project on a different floor of the Kojima Productions office -- causing other Kojipro staff to believe the others were on vacation.

Kojima seems confident that the demo will evolve into a full game, which will probably still be a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 -- after Peace Walker, he wanted to tell the story of The Boss again. "MGS3's story can't change, so we're thinking of Co-ops, 3D and portable-like elements," Kojima said. The final game may actually look better than the demo, as well. "The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3," Kojima said, "although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better."

Konami: ‘Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D’ For 3DS A ‘Full Product’

July 6th, 2010 No comments

Metal Gear Solid 3DS

The Naked Sample of "Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D" was one of the biggest buzz items among Nintendo's 3DS announcements at E3. Kojima Productions clouded the nature of the project a bit, however, by using the term "sample." Now, Konami has countered by using a meatier description that will probably just stir the speculation pot some more.

"Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D" is in fact "a full product," a Konami representative told Eurogamer.

That sounds far more assertive that the terminology being emphasized from Kojima's wing of the development process.

"We can't say one way or the other whether or not something like that will come out on the 3DS," Kojima Productions assistant producer Sean Eyestone said on the Kojima Productions Podcast. "At this point we can't say anything. But what we did show at E3 was a sample of what we can do with the 3DS."

As far as the titles, subtitles and sample titles go, what any officially announced Metal Gear Solid title for the 3DS in the future will go by on its box is anyone's guess. A sample exists, and a full product exists, though, or so Konami hopes.

Will you be buying a 3DS with expectation of picking up a Metal Gear game? What are your impressions of "Snake Eater 3D" right now? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Konami expects Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker to sell 3m, delays Metal Gear Arcade

June 25th, 2010 No comments
In a Nikkei BP interview (translated by Andriasang), CEO Fumiaki Tanaka said that he expects around 3 million units of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker to sell worldwide. That's a pretty high number for a PSP game, but it's not outrageous for a game that is at least part Monster Hunter. The sales were "according to expectations" at the time of the interview -- which predated this month's North American and European release of the game. We'll find out next month how many copies sneaked into Western homes in the first month of release.

Tanaka also announced a delay for Metal Gear Arcade out of its original March release date. The company is putting in some extra time on the title, which most of us will never see anyway, because seriously, when was the last time you saw an arcade?

Kojima’s Use Of ‘Snake’ Name Received John Carpenter’s Blessing

June 22nd, 2010 No comments

Solid Snake

Director John Carpenter is contributing to "F.E.A.R. 3," but it turns out that he also offered support for Hideo Kojima in the Metal Gear Solid series. Carpenter introduced Kurt Russell's character Snake Plissken to the world in his 1981 film "Escape from New York," and Kojima reportedly reached out to him for approval, since the leading man in Metal Gear's name is Solid Snake.

"[Hideo Kojima] has written me and asked me for my blessing on the game and I wrote him back [to say] how about it?" Carpenter told CVG. "He's a very nice man."

The request came before Kojima released his first MSG title, though there isn't a quote from Kojima in the report that says what Solid Snake might have been named if Carpenter had rebuked him. If Carpenter has chosen that response, you have to wonder if we'd be playing games as Solid Eel or Solid Serpent today.

Still, I don't know about you, but as a self-identifying gamer and cinephile, it's cool to know that the guy who made "Halloween" and the man behind "Metal Gear Solid" share a common respect for one another. Carpenter's words weren't as gushing as Guillermo Del Toro's take on "Flower," but he does sound gracious.

What do you think Solid Snake should have been named if Carpenter had frowned on Kojima's use of the name? Are you glad the director OK'd it? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising ‘proceeding very well’ beyond prototype phase

June 19th, 2010 No comments
With a new development team at the helm and an emphasis on fluid action, Metal Gear Solid: Rising is being positioned as a new standard in the long-running franchise. Mineshi Kimura, the game's director for Kojima Productions, told journalists at a Rising roundtable discussion during E3 that the game would be a counterpart to Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid legacy, with possible future installments going "back and forth" between Rising and more traditional Metal Gear games.

"But for Rising, we're gonna position it where people might know Metal Gear Solid, but they were reluctant to buy it," Kimura said. "[They might say],'Stealth is not my style,' or they didn't have the hardware because they only had a 360. We would like to target this audience where it's kind of potential Metal Gear Solid users and again, as I said earlier, the story will be based between MGS2 and MGS4." He added that players who were not familiar with the franchise's Byzantine plot would still be able to become involved and have fun with the game's "Zan-Datsu" cutting concept.

"'Zan' means to cut, and 'Datsu' means to take," explained creative producer Shigenobu Matsuyama. "We probably would offer a more wide range of play style so that you can aim where you want to cut and how deep you want to cut in order to achieve what you want to take. So, the play style will be quite in more depth than just cutting and killing."

Review: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

June 11th, 2010 No comments
Remember when Hideo Kojima said that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker would contain a feature so great that it would make people want to buy a PSP? Well, ol' Hideo got one over on us again, because it isn't just one feature: it's the entire game.

Rather than create a Metal Gear experience that somehow works within the confines of the handheld's capabilities, he and the Metal Gear Solid 4 team at Kojima Productions seem to have been inspired by them. The result is a game that is very much a "true" Metal Gear Solid that fits in your pocket, and much more. It's almost as if Kojima, compelled to make just one more game in the series -- wasn't there something about MGS4 being his last? -- looked at the PSP and said, "Let's show them everything we've got."

Hear the sounds of stealth with Astro Gaming’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker headset

June 8th, 2010 No comments
Astro Gaming wants you to play Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker the right way: with a headset larger than a PSP and almost as expensive. The company has unveiled a special Peace Walker version of its A30 headset, featuring Peace Walker imagery on the earphones. It has the same cross-platform compatibility as the traditional A30, and the same ability to swap out the graphics.

If you want the sides of your head to bear the Peace Walker logo (and if you also want to hear sounds and stuff), you can pick one of these up for $150. You can also add $20 and get a downloadable copy of the game, which is probably something you want, considering that you're hypothetically going to drop crazy bucks on a headset with its name on it.

MGS: Peace Walker Walkman, for the Big Boss who has everything

May 12th, 2010 No comments
Sony and Konami have partnered on a new Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker MP3 player, no doubt modeled closely after the kind of MP3 players used by real mercenaries in 1974. The NWD-W253Z Walkman is a special edition of a new waterproof (!), wrap-around Walkman MP3 player, featuring an original camouflage design and preloaded with six songs from Peace Walker.

The 4GB Walkman will be released in Japan in "mid-May" for ¥11,800 ($128). Each order will include a voucher for downloadable in-game characters (in Walkman apparel, of course!). One version of the device, limited to 2GB, will become available in the US at an unspecified date.
