Japanese hardware sales, July 12 – July 18: Cosplay edition

July 25th, 2010 No comments
In honor of the recently concluded Comic-Con festivities, the Japanese Hardware Sales post has decided to indulge in a bit of cosplay, donning the vestaments of its favorite weekend-based Joystiq feature -- other than itself, of course. Unfortunately, with only the most basic of Photoshop skills and having been forbidden from infringing on the territory of the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, this is really the best he could do:

"Welcome to the Weekly Japanese Hardware Sales Wrapup! Click past the jump to see the most recent Japanese hardware sales figures. Also, click here to see the most recent Marmaduke. He's a dog ... who thinks he's a person! Can you even handle that? We do not think you can."

Nothing quite says "I want to go to there" quite like James May's two-story Lego house. Sure, everything inside may be actually made of Lego rather than, say, actual stuff, but it's a house made of Lego! Isn't that enough for you? Oh, right, you might've come here for the Japanese hardware sales charts (which you'll find after the break), but we assure you the video tour of this house (also found after the break) is far more exciting.

Japanese hardware sales, June 14 – June 20: Rise of the Touchables edition

June 27th, 2010 No comments
As you text-skippers have already noticed, there's been a pretty significant shake-up in this week's Japanese hardware sales chart, with all three incarnations of the Nintendo DS getting substantial sales boosts. There's been a lot of speculation as to how these increases came about -- most seem to think it has something to do with Japan's recent discounting of all three handhelds, as well as the introduction of new colors for the current king supreme, the DSi LL.

Our guess? The gamers of Japan have found their desire to purchase the 3DS to be so overwhelming, that they've settled for a more immediate alternative: Purchasing three DSs. Sure, this option doesn't provide them with the depth of display which the recently announced handheld will provide, but we imagine that, if aligned end-to-end and turned on simultaneously, the three handhelds should provide players with unparalleled amounts of width.

- DSi LL: 30,183 19,045 (170.99%)
- PSP: 20,929 733 (3.38%)
- Wii: 19,045 1,543 (7.49%)
- DSi: 18,214 8,042 (79.06%)
- PS3: 17,175 501 (2.83%)
- DS Lite: 5,126 2,018 (64.93%)
- Xbox 360: 2,060 1,165 (36.12%)
- PS2: 1,568 277 (21.46%)
- PSP Go: 837 119 (16.57%)

Japanese hardware sales, May 31 – June 6: E3 checklist edition

June 14th, 2010 No comments
Around this time every year, we like to allow ourselves at least one week of solid freak-out time in order to get prepared for E3. As we were fairly busy realizing the beautiful, beautiful dream that is Futurestiq for a majority of our waking hours last week, we weren't able to have our annual extended breakdown. Of course, this will have no effect on our coverage, but we know we'll forget to pack at least one important item for our journey to the west coast. You know, like our camera. Or our laptop charger. Or those pills we have to take everyday at noon in order to continue breathing regularly.

Oh well, no use crying over spilled, extremely expensive hypoallergenic medication. We're en route to E3, where we'll relate unto you all of the scoops, news and anecdotal horror stories we come across. Hopefully there'll be more of the first two, and less of the third, but we can't pretend to know how things are going to play out.

- PSP: 23,588 1,466 (5.85%)
- PS3: 18,951 2,036 (9.70%)

Japanese hardware sales, May 24 – May 30: Pre-Storm Calm edition

If you've been keeping tabs on the extra-savory rumors and speculation that's surfaced over the past month, you're probably well aware of the fact that E3 goes down in a little over a week. If you weren't aware of that fact, don't be too upset -- some people just aren't as perceptive as others. You probably also haven't noticed all of the hidden cameras we installed in your apartment when you were at Whole Foods last week. We're kidding, of course. (We love your new haircut, by the way.)

As such, we're going to take the next seven days to prepare physically, mentally, spiritually and gastronomically for the rigors of the approaching, week-long news deluge. Don't be alarmed if our posts lack their usual sheen and polish -- we probably just expended our copy-editing energies during one of our daily training exercises. It's difficult to focus on grammar and punctuation when you're running a tour de stade, you know?

Japanese hardware sales, May 10 – May 16: How it Ends edition

May 23rd, 2010 No comments
Right when this post goes live on our site, the tropical, mysterious television series Lost should have just concluded its six-year run. We realize that for the next few weeks, that's all that fans of the show are going to want to talk about. To preempt the takeover our site by such discussion, we're turning the comments section of this post into your own personal soapbox, from which you can proclaim how disappointed/delighted you were with the finale.

We'll start things off: Holy crap! We can't believe they were all dead the whole time. Only, were they really dead, since the whole thing took place in Walt's dream? We guess that makes sense, but we can't get behind the whole "Hurley is actually an angel" plot twist. And we're still not sure about the whole Angel-Hurley spin-off series, but we'll at least give the pilot episode a shot.

Note: We actually wrote this post this afternoon, long before the episode aired. Still, we bet at least one of these things actually happened.

- PSP: 24,475 10,758 (30.53%)
- PS3: 20,463 5,722 (21.85%)
- Wii: 17,570 13,829 (44.04%)
- DSi LL: 15,879 10,854 (40.60%)
- DSi: 9,990 5,749 (36.53%)
- Xbox 360: 4,370 92 (2.15%)
- DS Lite: 2,695 1,331 (33.06%)

Japanese hardware sales, May 3 – May 9: Steam-powered world edition

May 16th, 2010 No comments
We'll make no bones about it -- a lot of the Joystiq staff punches keys all day long on Apple devices, gritting their teeth while writing up PC game sales posts. Sure, booting into Windows is always an option, but who's got the time? Life's too short for green bananas, we say! Thankfully, Steam has arrived on an operating system more readily accessible to our hands and things will assuredly never be the same (oh, and you should probably join our Steam group!).

While we're not 100 percent sure if Steam's Mac release made an impact on the hardware sales of gaming consoles in Japan this past week, we're really, really, really excited about finally playing some games on the ol' workhorse. But those Japanese hardware sales? Yeah, they're mostly down. Has the Japanese public shifted its purchasing focus towards Valve's downloadable push onto the Mac? Clearly that's what happened!

... Or last week's big game releases in Japan have begun to peter off. One of the two.

- PSP: 35,233 24,082 (-40.60%)

Japanese hardware sales, April 26 – May 2: Best Mother’s Day Ever edition

May 9th, 2010 No comments
Why, might you ask, is today officially the best and greatest and arguably most radical Mother's Day of all time? Did it have anything to do with the actual events of the day? Are we perhaps celebrating the very concept of motherhood? Did we finally land that long sought-after appearance on America's Best Dance Crew? No, no and no -- we're simply thrilled by all the green seen in the figures below.

The gaming populace in Japan is having an even better Mother's Day, it seems, as they're all likely still playing the two games responsible for a majority of these upward movements: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. In fact, we bet that someone, somewhere in Japan, is playing one of these games right now, when they should be enjoying a nice family dinner, and honoring their mother. Cut that out right now, young man. She deserves better.

Japanese hardware sales, April 19 – April 25: Robots on the Moon edition

May 2nd, 2010 No comments

Sure, today we might be charting the sales of video game hardware in Japan, but we've been wondering for years now just how long it'll be until we're charting the progress of robots from Japan making their way to Earth's Moon. Thankfully, we found out earlier this week that that glorious future may only be five-ish years from now, bringing our dream of humanity's interstellar robotic domination one step closer.

We have to imagine the game hardware-buying citizens of Japan were so engrossed by the aforementioned space android news that they nearly forgot to purchase any new equipment -- the only growth seen this week was for Sony's PlayStation 3 and PSP, while the entire rest of the chart took a dip. We can only hope that by next week, Japan's gaze will have returned from the stars for long enough to purchase some new hardware. Or focus on building more space robots.

Okay, we're actually voting for more space robots.
