Ghost Recon: Future Soldier short film teaser uncloaked

July 27th, 2010 No comments
Ubisoft has released a short teaser for the upcoming live-action short film based on Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (not to be confused with the live-action trailer for the game that released earlier this year). Entitled Ghost Recon: Alpha, it appears the short will focus primarily on soldiers murdering people in precise, futuristic ways.

The film, created by the same team behind the Oscar-winning Logorama, is set to debut in 2011, presumably sometime close to the launch of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Preview: Ghost Recon Future Soldier

The video game industry needs to make up its mind. Some games claim that war is a constantly changing beast, evolving and shaping to the world around it, while other games claim that war never changes. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier straddles the line between these two opposing views. War itself -- or more specifically the conflicts that incite wars -- doesn't change much, but the technology to take out the other guy is constantly evolving.

Impressions: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

By now you've likely seen the impressive live-action teaser trailer through which Ubisoft announced its latest Ghost Recon title, Future Soldier. If you haven't, well, have a look before reading any further. It's important since, last week at Ubisoft's offices, I saw the actual game in action -- and just about everything from that trailer is an actual gameplay mechanic. And then some.

I got a look at the makings of a future soldier and how their abilities -- gear, weapons and additional battlefield hardware -- will evolve the series, plus how Ubisoft and Red Storm just might have come up with a way for teams to play more like, well, teams in online matches.

Ghost Recon live-action trailer has cloaking devices, explosions

March 26th, 2010 No comments
Ubisoft is kind of knocking it out of the park with live-action short films based on its games. First it brought us Assassin's Creed: Lineage, now we have a live-action trailer for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The trailer, directed by Ben Mor, pretty much has anything you could want. Rather than spoil the action, we'll just give a brief rundown of some of the things included:
  • Minigun-packing robot drones
  • Personal cloaking devices
  • Explosions
  • Shoulder mounted anti-tank missiles
Yeah, you should probably watch it right now. And don't forget a full short film is still slated to be released later this year.

Ubisoft prepping short film, a Ghost Recon: Future Soldier prequel

March 10th, 2010 No comments
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ubisoft will release a short film ahead of the release of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The film will be helmed by Francois Alaux and Herve de Crecy, the duo that just won an Academy Award for their short film Logorama. We're assuming the Ghost Recon film won't be quite as cheeky. The short, which will serve as a prequel to Future Soldier, will be a 20-minute live-action film, reportedly with a budget between $8-10 million. It's being written by Tim Sexton, co-writer of Children of Men.

The project is in line with Ubisoft's ongoing strategy to expand its scope of media to include more than just video games. Last year, the company released the Assassin's Creed: Lineage short film series to promote Assassin's Creed II. Later in the year, Ubisoft Montreal's Yannis Mallat envisioned a future where Ubisoft crafts films and games using the same assets, which is precisely what it did with Lineage. Given the talent and financial backing behind the Future Soldier film, it looks like Mallat's future could be a bright one.

Splinter Cell: Conviction, future Ubisoft PC games to use internet-based DRM

March 1st, 2010 No comments
Assassin's Creed 2 has yet to even arrive on PC, but ever since PC Gamer got an early hands-on with the final retail version, Ubisoft's ... somewhat cumbersome (to be very polite) internet-based DRM has caused a bit of a worry for some gamers. As it would seem, regardless of consumer complaint, the publisher is allegedly moving ahead with plans to implement the anti-piracy software in many of its upcoming titles.

Softpedia
reports that an Ubi rep (speaking with PC Gamer) has confirmed Splinter Cell: Conviction, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic, and the recently announced Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to employ the DRM tools. The publisher also specifically pointed out that different titles handle the loss of data differently -- for instance, AC2 depends on checkpoints and The Settlers 7 saves wherever you last were -- though PC Gamer supposedly pressed for an answer to the question on all our minds: Will every PC game from Ubisoft in the future have this DRM?

Cryptically, the publisher replied, "It's hard for us to say, yes, from now until the day that we all die all of our games are going to include this but most will." While we can appreciate the efforts of publishers to diminish piracy of their games, we can't help but wonder what the logic is in seemingly frustrating your already dwindling legitimate consumer base with measures targeting the folks who probably wouldn't purchase games anyway.

Wii, PSP and DS Versions Of ‘Ghost Recon: Future Soldier’ Confirmed

February 10th, 2010 No comments

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Ubisoft put the Xbox 360 edition of "Ghost Recon: Future Soldier" front and center when they announced the game this week, revealing that a multiplayer beta would be available to early buyers of "Splinter Cell: Conviction." PC and PS3 versions were confirmed with less fanfare over Twitter, but the complete platform lineup now includes the Wii, PSP and DS as well.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot clarified his company's "Future Soldier" platform plans in an earnings report conference call, according to GameSpot. Whether or not the various incarnations of the title will be released simultaneously or strewn out over a staggered roll-out remains a mystery, but as of right now it looks like the last Tom Clancy game of 2010 will be on everything but the iPhone -- and I can't imagine that's not at least being toyed with.

The 360 still seems to be the focal point of the launch though, now that the PC version of "Conviction" has been confirmed to not be shipping with beta access codes, according to the article. Beyond that info, story details for "Future Soldier" are still sparse, so there's plenty more to be revealed before the beta goes up in a few months.

Which version of "Future Soldier" interests you the most? Do you think including the Wii is a smart move? Share your insights in the comment section below.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Teased Right Here, Right Now [Clips]

February 9th, 2010 No comments

Ubisoft's just announced Ghost Recon: Future Soldier gets its first trailer, a teaser if we've ever seen one. Don't expect gameplay as you hit the play button, but prepare for radical invisibility cloaks!

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, PSP, Nintendo DS and Wii this fall, with an Xbox 360 beta arriving April 13, 2010 in North America. The previously Xbox Live exclusive teaser is now yours for the viewing, treating you to a futuristic map of the world, vague hints of international threats and some yadda-yadda-yadda-ing about how war has changed and that soldiers must change with it.

I for one welcome our new Ghost Recon: Future Soldier warriors and will do whatever it takes to unlock that invisible blanket (short of pre-ordering the game, of course).
