Capcom apologizes for unannounced Final Fight: Double Impact DRM

Capcom has sent over a response to the revelation of Final Fight: Double Impact's DRM, which requires that a user be signed into PSN to play it, even in single-player. The publisher apologized to fans -- not for the restriction, but for not making the fact that there was a restriction clearer.

"Typically, the notification for a required PlayStation Network connection appears in the full game description when a game is downloaded from the PlayStation Store," the statement reads. "Unfortunately when populating this content this detail was overlooked and wasn't included in the versions of the game that released in North America and Asia."

Capcom has "acted quickly with Sony Computer Entertainment America" and ensures fans that it will be addressed. Before you start pooling your money with your PSN-sharing friends, we have our own warning: given the context of the statement, the promised fix is more likely to be the addition of a warning than the removal of the DRM. PS3 Final Fight: Double Impact requires PSN connection

Final Fight: Double Impact may be a collection of retro games, but some owners of the PS3 version have discovered that it is, at heart, a little too modern. The game will not run unless the user is signed into an online PSN account. If you try to load up Double Impact while not signed in, you'll just get a curt "Sign into PlayStation Network. (80029516)" message on the screen. (The Xbox 360 version launches without issue, even when not signed into Xbox Live.)

While it may not be a big deal to most of us who are signed into PSN whenever we use our PS3s, it does make us wonder why Capcom or Sony don't allow people to play the game, even in single-player or local multiplayer, without an internet connection. We've contacted both parties about the issue. Anyone else appreciating the irony of having to be connected to the internet to play games made before most of us knew what an internet was?

Final Fight: Double Impact is the highlight of this week's PSN update -- especially if you're a Magic Sword fanboy. Those interested in test drives can take the Skate 3 demo out for an ollie, while the latest Sam & Max adventure game is also available to try.

As has become normal, there's an impressive new helping of comics for the PSP. This latest update adds the first eight issues of Kick-Ass, which has, as they stamp on the covers of those rectangular objects known as books nowadays, become "a major motion picture."

Final Fight: Double Impact hits download services this week, with the side-scrolling fantasy action game Magic Sword as the delicious second course in the Final Fight meal. Lest you be satisfied with those two games, Capcom design director Kraig Kujawa revealed two more games that were considered for the pack: the 1987 action game Black Tiger, and the horizontal shmup Forgotten Worlds.

In the tweet, Kujawa said these two were the "other games ... considered for Final Fight: Double Impact second billing," suggesting that the plan was for two total games all along. That means that we don't have to cry as we imagine the four-game pack Double Impact that almost was, and instead we can concentrate on our delight with Magic Sword.

Final Fight: Double Impact press kit is the mayor of all press kits

To remind press about the upcoming release of Final Fight: Double Impact, and to fill all but a few lucky people with painful jealousy, Capcom is sending out these delightful press kits, inside (what else) a breakaway barrel.

Packed within that powerup distribution vessel is an arcade token with images from both Final Fight and Magic Sword, a copy of the soundtrack on cassette(!), "Ninja vs. Bear" and "Haggar for Mayor" badges, a reversible t-shirt with one of the two games on each side, and a can of pink hair color spray, in honor of Final Fight's Poison.

Non-press members will have an opportunity to get one of these from Capcom's online store, but you'll have to be vigilant! In the meantime, see the press kit unbarreled after the break, thanks to Ars Technica.

We've been waiting patiently for Capcom to release Final Fight yet again, this time in the form of the PSN/XBLA Final Fight: Double Impact set (which also includes Magic Sword). Capcom just let us know that the magical combination of classic brawling and online play will be available on Xbox Live April 14, and on the PlayStation Store April 15.

In case you haven't been keeping up with old game news, Double Impact features optional graphical filters, remixed soundtracks, and, most importantly, drop-in co-op. Capcom doesn't explicitly mention this, but each purchase also contributes to the Mike Haggar mayoral campaign fund.

Final Fight: Double Impact Puts You Back In the Arcade [Ces10]

The most impressive thing about Capcom's download ports of arcade classics Final Fight and Magic Sword aren't the gameplay, it's the frame that the game plays within.

Gamers have the option of turning on a frame for the games that turns the sides of the monitor into replicas of the old gaming guides that used to flank the sides of old arcade cabinet monitors. The view can also be tweaked to replicate the slightly outwardly distorted look of an old, cheap arcade monitor.

It's heaps better than the chintzy, sometimes generic frames applied to other arcade titles that show up on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Game play for both Final Fight and Magic Sword are spot on.

The classic brawler, made by Akira Nishitani and Akira Yasuda who went on to make Street Fighter II, is a straight-forward side-scrolling arcade title packed with endearing flaws. The depth of the game remains tricky to master, you can still accidentally take out your fellow gamer when attacking bad guys and the graphics featuring an overwhelming kaleidescope of colors. And that's why I love the original and its painfully exact port.

Magic Sword has gamers work there way through a mystical tower, using found keys to free captives and recruit allies. It's been a long time since I've played the original back in its 90s arcade heyday and I can't wait to spend some time working through the game again.

What's interesting here is that Capcom gets that it is the nostalgia factor that helps to sell these games so they go the extra length to amp that up, not only capturing the feel of the gameplay and in-game graphics, but allowing you to distort the screen and add surprisingly realistic frames to the game so you feel more like you're at an arcade.

The next step needs to be sending people who download the game for the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 in April chewed up wads of gum to stick under their controllers when playing.

Final Fight: Double Impact

It's surely no accident that just after "Final Fight" characters Cody and Guy were announced as contestants in March's "Super Street Fighter 4" Capcom decided to schedule a downloadable re-release of the pair's original title with "Final Fight: Double Impact." Both "Final Fight" and the knights-and-swords classic "Magic Sword" will be included in the Xbox Live Arcade and PSN packages that will trail "SSF4" in April.

"Double Impact" will integrate "GGPO" technology to "frame-accurate arcade experience across the internet with online voice chat and the ability to join games in progress," according to Capcom's press release today, which promises a lot of multiplayer functionality.

"Final Fight," is of course the now legendary tale of a shirtless mayor and a couple of martial artists who have to save his daughter and city from a gang called Mad Gear. Its partner in "Double Impact," "Magic Sword," uses similar gameplay mechanics in a stricter 2-D space as its hero "The Brave One" battles the Medieval forces of the dark lord Drokmar.

The graphics are getting HD-ified and the same composer who masterminded tunes for "Bionic Commando: Rearmed" will be stepping in to work on sound, but otherwise it sounds like both games will be intact and your arcade memories with them will be ripe for reliving.

Capcom has announced that the Final Fight / Magic Sword combo pack known as Final Fight: Double Impact will hit Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network in April 2010. In addition to the previously announced graphical filters, viewing modes and drop-in / drop-out co-op, Capcom has also revealed that both games will feature a selectable soundtrack from the people responsible for the excellent Bionic Commando: Rearmed soundtrack. Furthermore, the games will utilize GGPO, a networking library used to essentially eliminate lag during online play.

Oh, it also includes both Final Fight and Magic Sword.
