First Look: ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ Comic Prequel

July 16th, 2010 No comments

Fallout: New Vegas

Fresh off the word that Comic-Con attendees would be getting a glimpse at the upcoming "Assassin's Creed" comic, we've learned that Bethesda will be doing the same thing with the upcoming "Fallout: New Vegas" comic. Bethesda posted a portion of a splash page from the comic, which will act as a prequel for "Fallout: New Vegas."

Titled "All Roads," the comic will be written by Chris Avellone, who likely knows more about the "Fallout" universe than anyone else on the planet. After all, he penned the Fallout Bible, a collection of documents which detail the world's events leading up to the apocalypse we've come to know and love. Avellone worked on the first two "Fallout" games and is serving as the creative director on "Fallout: New Vegas."

Also on-board is Geof Darrow, who will be providing the art for "All Roads," while Peter Doherty is in charge of the colors. You can see what sort of style they're going for up top.

I think the most intriguing thing about "Fallout: New Vegas" is the prospect of seeing large crowds of people. It's something that "Fallout 3" never really did, because of the setting but also because of technical limitations. Since Vegas is supposed to be a central hub for the Western states (hence the comic's title), Obsidian really needs to make it feel packed. Early preview builds have felt a little desolate, even on the Vegas Strip, but here's hoping some progress is being made on that front so that the game can match the bustle of the above art.

Preview: Fallout: New Vegas

The chance to play Fallout: New Vegas has been hard to come by -- we've seen it in action before, but it wasn't until a little while back at a pre-E3 event that I was able to finally grab a controller and explore Obsidian's take on the streets and surroundings of a post-apocalyptic Sin City.

But it turns out, as I wandered into the dingy casinos and off into the desert for a few quests, that I had already played the game anyway, back when it was called Fallout 3.

‘Fallout: New Vegas’ Release Dates Crawl Out Of Their Vault

June 14th, 2010 No comments

Fallout New Vegas release date

"Fallout: New Vegas" wants to be seen as a high roller this week at E3, judging from its extravagant signage, and kicking things off with a new trailer and release dates for North America and Europe are great ways to attract attention. Whether you plan on purchasing a collector's edition or civilian edition of the new series installment, you'll want to mark your calender for October 19 in the U.S. and October 22 in Euro-land.

Bethesda announced their launch dates for the "Fallout 3" follow-up ahead of the week-long news glut commencing today in the video game industry. Their fresh trailer shows loads of guns, mutated baddies and Vegas-style activities that should be open to players in their post-apocalyptic take on America's gambling capital.

The new footage shows off a great deal more than the debut trailer did, though the story is still pretty mysterious. If you enjoyed watching Megaton city get blown to Kingdom Come in "Fallout 3" it looks like more opportunities for explosion-making will await you in this game.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what kind of acts Bethesda has lined up for the Aces Theater that appears here. "Fallout 3" didn't have a whole lot of live entertainment going on in-game, and while I don't necessarily expect "GTA 4"-sized helpings of non-interactive shows, post-nuclear war renditions of Penn and Teller or the Rat Pack could be good for a mid-game break.

What do you think of the latest "Fallout: New Vegas" trailer? Is this going to be a day-one buy for you on October 19? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

VATS what Fallout: New Vegas looks like!

June 11th, 2010 No comments
Finally! Actual gameplay footage of Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas surfaced in the latest episode of GTTV, and unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like Fallout 3. If it weren't for the bright lights of the casinos, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference. This E3 trailer is cut to make New Vegas look more like a FPS, but pay attention, and you'll see some VATS action as well.

‘Fallout: New Vegas’ DRM Protection Via Steam

June 9th, 2010 No comments

Fallout: New Vegas DRM

If you plan on exploring the "Fallout: New Vegas" strip legally on your PC and don't have a Steam account, you'd better make some changes in your life by the time the game arrives this November. Bethesda has confirmed that PC copies will need to be activated via Steam, thereby utilizing the DRM-related protective measures come with such a move.

"Yes. 'Fallout: New Vegas' will fully utilize the Steamworks SDK," Bethesda Softworks senior producer Jason Bergman said in a question-and-answer post on the Bethesda Softworks Forums. "This means that retail PC copies will activate via Steam. We are also using Steam for achievements and other features (but not multiplayer, of course. FNV remains a single player only game)."

At first glance, this doesn't look like it will be a huge issue for PC gamers. At the very least it doesn't sound like they'll be going to the lengths that "Assassin's Creed 2" and "Command and Conquer 4" did. Still, it's a tougher stance than Blizzard appears to have right now.

Personally, I think activation systems like this are the way to go, just so long as you keep the activation framework in place down the line for people who buy games several years after they come out. A response near the bottom of the page indicates that the "New Vegas" precautions should be pretty user-friendly in the scheme of things.

"[Y]ou can install the game on as many systems as you want (with no restrictions!), and you do not have to be online to play the game after your initial activation," the post reads. "Not only that, but once the game has activated on Steam, you can throw out the game DVD entirely and just download the game over Steam. If you don’t even have a DVD drive, you can just take the CD-Key from the box, enter it into Steam, and download it without ever using the disc at all."

Sounds fine by me!

Do you think Bethesda made the right choice to require "New Vegas" activation through Steam? Do you plan on picking the game up for PC? Share your responses in the comment section below.

The Fallout: New Vegas box art is stoic

May 13th, 2010 No comments
We struggle to find anything else to say about the Fallout: New Vegas boxart that's been revealed via the Bethesda Blog. Depicting a single New California Republic Ranger standing alone (you know, the guy from the first trailer?), he wields his pistol, presumably ready for any ne'er-do-wells lurking. Or maybe he's just showing his gun to us? We can't imagine it's very impressive, what with all the sand in the post-apocalyptic desert.

Of course, if the regular edition of the game doesn't do it for you, don't forget there's a collector's edition you can snag for $79.99 on PS3 and Xbox and $69.99 on PC -- or about 7,162 bottle caps.*

*Note: Please don't mail bottle caps to Bethesda.

Uncovering The Mystery Of The ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ Strip

May 7th, 2010 No comments

Fallout: New Vegas

Bethesda and Obsidian recently showed off a number of locations from the next "Fallout" entry, but the one area they kept strictly under wraps is the titular city itself. New Vegas, surrounded by walls and seen by we pressers from only a great distance in game, is the sort of destination we can only dream about at the moment.

While questions were obviously reeling in our minds there were a few tidbits of information we were able to glean from our extensive tour of the game and subsequent one on one with lead designer, Josh Sawyer.

What do we know about New Vegas?

Don't Expect the Same Skyline.

Sawyer was quick to point out that New Vegas is not based on the Las Vegas we know today. The entire "Fallout" universe, as it's been devised, is set after a nuclear fallout in the year 2077 -- a world which is strikingly different than what our 2077 will (most likely) look like. It's a future as envisioned by people of the 1940s and 50s -- The Golden Age of Science Fiction, as it's called. "Our Vegas is not based on real casinos," says Sawyer. "We're basing them off of casinos styled from the 1950s."

So that leaves a pretty blank canvas for the developers to work with. Though we'd be surprised if there weren't similar "themed" casinos out there on the New Vegas strip. Something pirate-y, Egyptian themed, or maybe something eastern wouldn't be too far of a stretch.

It's Still Vegas

Sawyer confirms that there will be gambling in New Vegas across a number of the casinos but, other than that, he remains vague about the rest of the content there. "We want the strip to, well, feel like the strip. And the strip is Vegas."

How that strip ends up feeling though, may be relative to what era they're basing it on. Will we see the streets filled with prostitution banners and fliers like in the late 80s and early 90s? We can probably expect a little of that, but not quite on that level. After all, the 50s still remain the prevalent source for much of the content in "Fallout."

A Grittier "Fallout"...If That Were Possible

The original two "Fallout" games -- especially the second -- were surprisingly grim and gritty. Prostitution, drugs, a general disdain for the human spirit… those were all fairly prevalent issues that developer, Black Isle, delivered rather well. And while "Fallout 3" certainly had its dark moments, I can't remember feeling quite the same wash of grime across the entire game.

New Vegas is looking to bring some of that dirt back into the picture. "There is a very heavy influence on drugs, and sex, and gambling and the impact that it has on people," Sawyer reveals.

"You, as a character, can participate in a lot of this stuff. You can also help bust it up if you want. The focus for that sort of stuff is in the city of New Vegas itself, rather than the larger conflict between Caesar's Legion and the New California Republic…

In New Vegas you will see a lot of things that you remember from New Reno [from 'Fallout 2'], in terms of the under-handedness and how people are used and thrown away a lot."

Personally, New Reno was my favorite city in "Fallout 2" so this news is more than welcome. And whether or not the city of New Vegas is integral to the overall story (it's in the title of the game after all) remains to be seen. From the sounds of it, it looks like it's its own hub of culture like Rivet City in "Fallout 3."

What do you want to see in the city of New Vegas? Let us know in the comments below.

Interview: Josh Sawyer on Fallout: New Vegas

May 5th, 2010 No comments
Imagine going to work on "Van Buren," the original Fallout 3, as a designer for Black Isle Studios, only to see the title canceled due to parent company Interplay's financial problems. Then, imagine Bethesda buying the Fallout 3 license and developing an entirely different game, which goes on to win multiple awards and accolades. Now, imagine you're brought back into the franchise, as a designer for Obsidian Entertainment, to create a sequel to Bethesda's popular title. Preposterous, you say?

Josh Sawyer is the lead designer on Fallout: New Vegas and, after having the rug yanked from under him on the original Fallout 3, he's happy to be working on the latest new Fallout project -- one that will be released later this year. Read on for our conversation with Sawyer.

Joystiq: What's your history with the Fallout franchise?

Josh Sawyer: I worked on what's called "Van Buren," which was the codename when Black Isle started to work on what would have been Fallout 3, and we had worked on it for maybe half a year, and then it was canceled because Interplay had a lot of financial problems.

Obsidian CEO describes Fallout: New Vegas as ‘almost’ original IP

May 4th, 2010 No comments
Obsidian Entertainment has worked on a number of games based on existing franchises, including Star Wars, Forgotten Realms and Aliens*. While the studio will release an original IP in Alpha Protocol in just several weeks (through publisher Sega), its following release will be the next installment in the Fallout franchise, Fallout: New Vegas, with publisher Bethesda.

At a recent Bethesda press event, I asked Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart about the studio's decision to take on the next Fallout versus pursuing an original IP. Head past the break for Urquhart's thoughtful response.

*[Editor's note: The Aliens-based game was ultimately canceled.]
