Point and click your way through Mafia II’s Story of Frankie Potts

May 5th, 2010 No comments
We kind of like this trend of free Internet-based games made just to promote their big-release cousins. Dragon Age Journeys is the standout so far, but Mafia II is entering the ring with a free point-and-click game called The Story of Frankie Potts, playable right now on the game's website. There's not much to see yet (just a few clickable scraps of paper and a darkroom where you can develops a new screenshot), but the timeline feature hints that there will be new content every day to check out. And not only will you get to learn about Mafia II, but eventually there will be "four challenge games" in which you can compete with other players around the world for "limited edition swag," and even a copy of the game along with a PS3 and 60" TV with surround sound system to play it on.

Yes, it's "promogaming" -- the goal is to sell you on the game. But especially if these free experiences are intriguing, we'll welcome a little extra gameplay for no extra charge. It's better than just reading a press release, right?

The Dragon Age Journeys Begin Today [Ea 2d]

October 22nd, 2009 No comments

EA 2D sets the stage for Dragon Age: Origins today, with the launch of the first chapter of Dragon Age Journeys, the 2-dimensional browser-based tie-in to BioWare's blockbuster RPG.

At least the press release says the first of three Dragon Age Journeys chapters launches today. As of this writing the website is still only hosting the preview video for the game, but I have faith in the power of the press release. The game sees the player exploring the underground dwarven kingdom of Orzammar, taking down enemies in what the release calls "intense tactical combat." Like Dragon Age: Origins, players will choose one of six origin stories that shape the way the game's story plays out.

"Dragon Age Journeys sets the stage for Dragon Age: Origins," said Mark Darrah, Executive Producer, Dragon Age: Origins. "The team has shown the Dragon Age Franchise in a bold new light and the release of this game allows a broad audience of players to discover our dark fantasy universe for the first time."

Hopefully the whole not actually being live issue will clear up as the day progresses. For now, you've got something to refresh your browser over, and that's always exciting.

Dragon Age: Journeys bonus items transfer to Origins

October 22nd, 2009 No comments
You may have scoffed at the prospect of a flash-based, 2D version of BioWare's upcoming RPG epic, Dragon Age: Origins. "A browser game meant to simulate the deep, immersive emotions that arise when one plays roles," you may have said, mid-scoff. "Who would play something like that?" As it turns out, if you're looking forward to the full, three-dimensional version of Dragon Age, the answer to your query is simply: You.

A short Q&A on the Dragon Age: Journeys developers' blog cultivated an enticing bit of info about the browser adventure: if you play through it while logged into your EA account, you can gain access to three items that will transfer over to your Dragon Age: Origins save file on Xbox 360, PS3 or PC. No details were given about the items in question, but we're imagining they'll either be used to help you slay dragons, or to help you become a more profound lover.

Dragon Age journeys to browsers in Flash-based tactical RPG

October 15th, 2009 No comments
BioWare and EA 2D, a web game team at Electronic Arts, have announced their collaboration on Dragon Age Journeys: The Deep Roads, a browser-based tactical RPG set in the world of Dragon Age: Origins. Early details on the planned three-chapter game are laid out on BioWare's blog, along with a roster of the indie Flash devs contributing to the project. Development is being led by Daniel Stradwick, creator of the web-based strategy RPG The Monster's Den.

According to EA 2D, "The Deep Roads features character classes, talent trees, sound effects, music and user interface taken directly from Dragon Age: Origins," and that it's getting "invaluable feedback and insight on the game from members of the Dragon Age team, including Drs. Ray [Muzyka] and Greg Zeschuk]." The confines of a browser seems like an odd place to play a game from a maker of epic RPGs like BioWare but, then again, the studio recently released an iPhone title -- so we're thinking any platform's fair game. Next up: Dragon Age for graphing calculators.
