If you
followed our advice and applied to be a part of the
Spec Ops: The Line multiplayer beta, you just may be finding an invitation in your inbox sometime soon. Joystiq reader Reece got his earlier this week and sent over some images of the sign-up process. 2K Games confirms, "This is correct, beta invites for
Spec Ops: The Line are going out to a small number of applicants. We'll be allowing more people into the private beta in the coming weeks."
Unfortunately, 2K also confirmed with Joystiq that this beta is "Xbox 360 only" - for you PC and PS3 gamers, consider it karmic payback for all that
early access on
Medal of Honor you've been enjoying while Xbox owners sat idly by. Anyone in on the beta? Sound off in the comments below or, heck,
send us an email.

We're currently basking in the warm, soft glow that commonly surrounds us shortly after discovering our newest
game-crush. Thanks to
Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the latest object of our affection is
The Dream Machine, a Flash-based adventure game from Cockroach Inc. (composed of developers Anders Gustafsson and Erik Zaring). The reason for our admiration? All of the characters and environments were handcrafted in a style reminiscent of
The Neverhood. Only, well,
prettier.
You can check out a trailer for the clay-and-cardboard indie title after the jump, or play through a brief demo on
the developer's website. Should that snippet tickle your fancy, Cockroach is currently accepting applications to get in on a beta for the game's first complete chapter.
We are so there.

Xbox 360 owners have been patiently waiting their turn to go online in the
Medal of Honor beta. After weeks of delays, it appears EA and DICE's multiplayer shooter is now available on Xbox Live. If you've managed to snag an elusive code, you'll be able to redeem it
here to exchange it for an Xbox Live voucher.
The beta is expected to end on
July 31st, giving Xbox owners at least ten days to get an early peek at the FPS. If you haven't managed to procure a code, stay tuned to our
Twitter account. We'll be giving away a few codes later in the day.
[Thanks to everyone that sent this in!]

Curious as to why you're still able to hop onto the online battlefields of
Medal of Honor, when the beta was scheduled to end last Sunday? The game's official blog
recently updated with the announcement that the multiplayer beta test had been extended to July 31 for the PS3 and PC versions of the game.
This extension could possibly be due to the
ever-lengthening delay of the 360 version of the beta test, which the blog post also referenced, stating, "we are continuing to work with Microsoft on the Xbox 360 beta and are dedicated to delivering it as soon as possible." We suggest trying to get it in before October 12, at which point a beta test would be
fairly redundant.

Ready for 2K's Dubai-based reboot of
Spec-Ops, but can't wait until the game releases
sometime next year? You'll be glad to hear, then, that the game's beta signups have already begun! It seems that, at the moment, the beta is just for Xbox 360 owners, but we've asked 2K for more info about if and when it'll be heading to PS3 and PC.
Signing up, however, doesn't necessarily
guarantee entry to the beta this minute. 2K's signup page notes, "If you are selected to participate in the Beta, we will contact you via the email address you provided with next-step instructions on how to redeem a download token." That said, it seems that anyone who manages to sign up before 2K
draws a line in the sand will get in. Hooray!

If you submitted an application to take part in the closed beta for
Star Wars: The Old Republic, you might want to check your inbox. The first wave of invites were recently sent out to a select few North American applicants, while future waves of invites will be expanded to potential Force-wielders in other territories.
If you haven't applied yet, you can still try to get into future waves by dropping the pertinent info on the
game's official site. If you did manage to get into the first wave, then
congratulations. We're all
really happy for you. No,
seriously. Have
loads of fun.

The closed beta for
Final Fantasy XIV begins this Saturday, July 10. If you've been invited to test drive the MMORPG, there should be an email waiting in your inbox. It'll point you to the official forums, where you'll have to log in and find a link to download the client. Think of it as a multi-tiered quest.
The final version of
Final Fantasy 14 will hit retail on September 30 in regular and more expensive "
early access" versions.

European participants in the
StarCraft 2 beta -- which shut down exactly one month ago today -- recently found themselves the recipients of a surprising package: a patch for the dormant pre-release of Blizzard's blockbuster strategy game. Blizzard has since announced the patch for the US, and released
patch notes for what is now known as
Patch 16, which includes Zerg balance fixes, new Achievements and six AI difficulties.
Considering that the beta was supposed to reappear "
several weeks" after the first phase ended, we wouldn't be surprised if this patch served as a harbinger for the beta's return -- especially since the retail version of the game is
due in
just 20 days. We think it's safe to start working on bolstering your APM once more.

Nothing quite says "Our game still exists!" like Interplay's volley of email messages recently sent to folks who signed up for an account on
Fallout Online's official website. According to a press release issued alongside the tease, it seems that this is just the first of many "tales from the wastelands" that early registrants will receive. Additionally, registrants will be "fast-tracked" for participation in the game's private (and eventually open) beta.
Interplay's
"coming soon" game page still has "Project V13" (now better known as
Fallout Online) listed as a 2012 release, so, ya know, we probably won't be venturing into those wastes anytime soon. Then again, by 2012, we might be wandering in the wasteland
for real.
