Despite a few bumps in the road for used games at retail chains and expanding efforts by publishers like EA and THQ limit the amount of game content available secondhand owners, Best Buy and Target have announced new initiatives to facilitate trade-ins. Both stores revealed methods for incentivizing game trade-ins, but they'll be taking slightly different approaches.
"The expansion of our trade-in program reaffirms our commitment to consistently pursue new ways to bring a better gaming experience to consumers," Best Buy senior vice president and general manager for the home entertainment group Chris Homeister said in a press release. "Fall marks the launch of several highly-anticipated gaming titles and new technology, and we're thrilled to provide gamers with innovative ways to connect with the games they love."
Best Buy's program, which is launching in "close to 600 Best Buy stores this week," includes a trade-in calculator, available on the chain's website to help estimate what you'll get for your games. Also, $20 gift cards will be offered for select titles this Sunday, August 29.
Target's trade-in program, meanwhile, will include used video games, as well as mobile phones and iPods. In-store credit will be provided to participating customers.
"Target Electronics Trade-In offers our guests an opportunity to upgrade their consumer electronics items for less... ," Target senior vice president Mark Schindele said in the company's announcement.
It's interesting to see renewed efforts from some of the country's largest game sellers while publishers are actively attempting to strangle the practice. The two sides have conflicting goals, but the next year may demonstrate whether or not they can find an equilibrium in the marketplace.
Who do you think will win out in the end? Online pass programs? Used games at retail? Is there room for both? Share your proposals in the comment section below.

As spotted by savings sleuth
Thrifty Nerd,
Splinter Cell: Conviction is currently available on
BestBuy.com for the
low,
low price of $20 -- that's 50 percent off list price, folks. If that weren't enough, those who decide instead to waltz into a retail store can pick up the game for the same discounted price, as Best Buy will price match any online deals. And hey, at just one Andrew Jackson worth of bills, you'll only be offing one American president for access to Third Echelon. Huzzah!

It looks like the "
opportunity" Best Buy saw in the used game market has become "reality," as the company is now
accepting used game trade-ins at nearly 600 stores in the US (with more stores on the way). Those who trade in games at Best Buy will receive a Best Buy gift card of equivalent value that can be used on anything in the store. Before long, Best Buy will begin selling used titles as well.
Don't bother looking for some
fancy, computerized trade-in kiosk either. In most stores, trades are accepted at the customer service desk, while "select locations" have a "dedicated Trade-In desk" inside the games department. If all that human contact is a bit much, you can also trade in games online at Best Buy's
pre-owned games site. Gift cards will be mailed within two weeks. Also, "select titles" are eligible for an extra $20 credit.
The website has a handy estimator to calculate the value of your used games. We're not quite sure what the basis is for trade-in value though, considering
Alpha Protocol clocks in at $27 while
Mass Effect 2 snags you just $8. If any of you out there take advantage of Best Buy's new program, be sure to let us know about the experience in the comments.

Best Buy is offering a
pretty sweet incentive to do your game shopping on its online store. The retailer will reward you with a $25 gift card when you purchase two games or accessories from its site. There's no end date listed for
the promotion, but there is a list you'll have to choose your games or gear from. Don't worry about having to pick from a crop of stinkers though -- it contains
694 items, including all the big upcoming releases.
Keep in mind that this deal is
only available through BestBuy.com and that, as the fine print says, the gift card will ship separately. (Hopefully that isn't retail-speak for "three months later.")
[Thanks, Eric!]

If you're looking to figure out what this "Tekken" stuff is all about after hearing about
Street Fighter X Tekken,-- or, perhaps, if you already like both
Tekken and savings -- Best Buy has a deal for you. The retailer has
tekken $20 off the current price of the Xbox 360 version of
Tekken 6, offering it for just $9.99.
In order to
tek (okay, we'll stop) advantage of this deal, you have to be a member of Best Buy's free "
Reward Zone," and you must use this
printable coupon in-store before August 22. But that's hardly $20 worth of work.
[Thanks,
@GeoffH3!]

Frugal shoppers should take note of a massive
Best Buy sale going on right now. It would seem everything must go, as Best Buy is not only discounting Platinum Games' excellent
Bayonetta down to $20 on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but also slashing prices across the board on
Xbox 360,
PS3,
Wii and
DS games.
If hardware is more you thing, Best Buy has the
Final Fantasy XIII and
Splinter Cell: Conviction Xbox 360 bundles for $299.99 a piece, with a $50 gift card. Our strong-wristed readers will likely be interested in the
DJ Hero bundle, which comes with one turntable controller -- it's only $40 right now.
Wait, what's that sound? It's as if millions of piggy banks cried out in terror, only to be silenced. I fear something -- oh,
right.

If you're raring to get your hands on
Madden NFL 11, Best Buy is
advertising a great incentive to do so at one of its stores. For buying EA's latest pigskin sim for Xbox 360 or PS3 at the retailer next week, you'll be able to get another game (from a list of select titles) for half off its usual price. Heck, even if you don't like football, this deal's enough to convince a friend who does to let you tag along on their purchase.
Spy the full list of price-slashed titles --
Alan Wake for $20? Yes, please! -- after the break.

On August 2, Amazon is having a
pretty sweet deal on the
Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 bundle, but if online retailers aren't your thing, Joystiq has just discovered from a reliable source that a new initiative at brick-and-mortar retailer Best Buy will discount both the
Final Fantasy XIII and
Splinter Cell: Conviction bundles to $299.99 permanently, starting August 1, and lasting until the retailer runs out of stock. How else did you think the retailer would clear shelf space for
the new hotness?
Each bundle comes with the titular game, two wireless controllers, a 250gb HDD and Xbox 360 console. The suggested retail price of each bundle right now is $349.99 (they both initially launched at a $399.99 price point), so this saves consumers a cool $50.
