Rooster Teeth Expo 2013 bites Austin July 5 – 7

Rooster Teeth Expo 2013 bites Austin July 5 7
Rooster Teeth, the production company behind Red vs. Blue and a slew of other video adventures, has announced the dates for its third annual Rooster Teeth Expo, or RTX. The event will be held at the Austin Convention Center (which also happens to house GDC: Online every year) from Friday, July 5 through Sunday, July 7.

RTX 2012 drew a crowd of 4,000 people with a diverse programming schedule that included as many Halo 4 announcements as it did YouTube panels featuring Hannah Hart of My Drunk Kitchen fame, making it a bit less orthodox than the typical gaming convention. Considering that RTX 2013 expands the event from two days to three, Rooster Teeth must believe its formula is working.

Diamond Trust of London now available outside of Kickstarter

Rohrer's Diamond Trust of London now available
Jason Rohrer's virtual board game Diamond Trust of London was the first retail DS game to be crowdfunded via Kickstarter, and now it's followed up that achievement by being the first DS game to be available outside of Kickstarter after a successful drive. In other words, you can just buy a copy now.

Rohrer is selling Diamond Trust directly from his website for $30. A counter on the site shows that there are around 4,500 copies left as of writing, which doesn't seem like very many copies at all. While missing out would teach you a lesson about scarce resources, much like we're sure the game would, it seems like a less fun way to learn.

‘Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII’ headed to 360/PS3 in 2013

August 31st, 2012 No comments
The "new direction" Square Enix is taking the story of Lightning is ... almost the same direction as before. As in, it's another sequel to Final Fantasy XIII. "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" was unveiled at tonight's Final Fantasy 25th anniversary events.

According to the game's Japanese website, Motomu Toriyama is heading up the third game in the Final Fantasy XIII series (yes, we seriously just wrote that) - a game that's said to end Lightning's story. A video was shown during tonight's event that we're expecting to see pop up any time now, but we've got a concept art gallery below for you to check out in the meantime.

Update: Andriasang's liveblog of the Japanese event shares a variety of details on the upcoming game, including Lightning's customizable gear (said to be many and varied), the setting ("Navus Partus"), and more. Check it out!

Fortnite getting a closed beta ‘early next year’

August 31st, 2012 No comments
As a special prize for one lucky attendee of tonight PAX Prime 2012 Fortnite panel - a reprise of the Fortnite panel we saw at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year - Epic Games gave out a golden ticket that provides early beta entrance to next year's Unreal Engine 4 PC game. So ... wait, does that mean there's gonna be an open beta for Fortnite?

"TBD," Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski told us immediately following the panel. "There will definitely be a closed beta," producer Tanya Jessing added, but she also refused to confirm whether an open beta is also in the cards. But hey, that one lady who won the ticket? She's totally in.

Apple targets Samsung’s Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note in second U.S. patent case

August 31st, 2012 No comments

Samsung Galaxy S III

Emboldened as ever by its court win over Samsung last week, Apple today said that Samsung’s Galaxy S III flagship smartphone and Galaxy Note infringe on its patents in a separate court case.

Unlike the Apple v. Samsung trial that relied on design patents, utility patents, and trade dress infringement (which led to more than $1 billion in damages lodged against Samsung), this case is focused on eight different utility patents Apple says Samsung has infringed on.

To make things even more confusing, this particular case is also being handled by District Judge Lucy Koh at the same San Jose federal court as last week’s Apple v. Samsung trial.

Back in July, Apple successfully scored a preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus with the second case, but Judge Koh suspended the sales ban temporarily. Apple previously tried to add the Galaxy S III to the case back in June, well before its U.S. release.

In its court filing tonight (PDF link), Apple added two models each of the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note to the case, which was initially filed in February and listed 17 infringing Samsung devices. Some of the devices were also listed in Apple’s earlier case against Samsung, like the Galaxy S II line, but this case also includes Samsung’s tablets and media players.

Among the utility patents Apple is listing are patent ’721, which refers to unlocking a phone with gestures on an unlock image, and patent ’172, which deals with a system and interface for offering word recommendations.

Given that Apple is now targeting newer Samsung devices, like the Galaxy S III and the just-released Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, any sales ban could seriously hurt Samsung in the U.S. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple decided to go the extra mile in this case after Samsung’s poor court showing last week.

President Obama’s Ask Me Anything on Reddit needed 60 dedicated servers (!)

August 31st, 2012 No comments

Apparently, POTUS is popular. 60 extra servers popular.

President Obama’s Ask Me Anything two days ago was a massive success, as Reddit highlighted earlier today in a blog post. Not only did the page get 2.99 million views on the day of the event, it has received another 2.3 million page views already as of this morning.

Perhaps the most surprising stat was the number of servers Reddit added to handle the onslaught of traffic. In preparation, Reddit added 30 dedicated servers “just for the comment thread.” When that turned out to not be enough, developers added another 30 dedicated servers.

Besides telling you how popular and/or controversial President Obama is, that also tells you that Reddit can scale servers very, very quickly.

More interesting stats from Reddit:

  • Peak transfer: 48 MBs per second
  • Peak traffic: over 100,000 page views per minute
  • Peak concurrent visitors: 198,000
  • Peak share of Reddit traffic to the AMA page: 30 percent (average for a very hot topic is 2-5 percent)

In fact, Obama’s AMA is the “only link in recorded history to have surpassed the front page.”

Reddit’s popularity seems to be growing with no end in sight, with between two and eight million unique visitors every month and six to eight million pageviews a day. Obama answering questions on the site will certainly increase that trend and expose the site to a wider, more mainstream audience.

Obama’s most interesting comment? The recipe for White House Beer will be available shortly.

And from the president’s own tongue: it’s tasty.

PSN’s Fuel Overdose combines ‘tactical action racing’ and grappling hooks

PSN's Fuel Overdose combines 'tactical action racing' and grappling hooks

What's "tactical action racing?" We aren't sure, but developer I-Friqiya claims its PS3 downloadable game Fuel Overdose is an example of that mystery genre. From the trailer, it involves top-down racing, with drift mechanics ... and grappling hooks. We're already on board. Any game plus a grappling hook is more than the sum of its parts.

Okay, actually that's probably not the "tactical" aspect. The initial announcement just covers the "racing" angle (plus grappling hooks!) I-Friqiya will reveal more about the other aspects later.

Twisted Pixel’s LocoCycle takes inspiration from some crazy places

August 31st, 2012 No comments
Lococycle goes a little nuts
You may think, after watching the initial trailer, that Twisted Pixel pulled LocoCycle (in which you control a renegade robotic motorcycle that shoots and karate-chops its way across the country) out of some loony creative cauldron of its own making. But that's not quite true, says studio director Michael Wilford, showing the game for the first time at PAX Prime 2012. There is a very clear inspiration, he says, and it's Ice Cube's 2004 motorcycle racing movie, Torque.

"It's a really shitty movie," Wilford tells us. "It tries to be Fast and the Furious on motorcycles." Twisted Pixel's art director gave a copy of Torque to the company's chief creative officer, Josh Bear, one day as a joke, and Bear was directly influenced by a viewing, especially a scene where two women battle with motorcycles. "Josh had a nightmare that night," says Wilford with complete sincerity, "and woke up the next day and said, 'We have to make a game about a fighting motorcycle.'"
