Rise of Nightmares graphic novel tells the story of Roland Childs

September 30th, 2011 No comments
So many tapes.
While we certainly found the Kinect-fueled experience of Rise of Nightmares to be novel, we never expected it would spawn an actual novel. We're talking about the graphic variety, as Sega has just announced and released Rise of Nightmares: The Lost Tapes of Roland Childs.

The novel tells the story of private detective Roland Childs, who was investigating the strange goings on in Romania before Rise of Nightmares protagonist "Josh" fell into the mix. Throughout the adventure, Josh can collect Childs' audio tapes, piecing together the mystery of the Romanian castle and its freakish inhabitants.

Granted, story isn't exactly the game's strong suit, but then Sega is offering the graphic novel free of charge, so who's complaining? You can read the whole thing on Sega's Flickr account (starting here) or download the novel as a PDF (here). As far as we know, the graphic novel does not require a Kinect.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2 dated for Europe, keeping silly name

September 30th, 2011 No comments

Despite repeated, impassioned cries from our web-based pulpit, Arc System Works is sticking with the full name "BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2" for the European release on 3DS and PlayStation Portable this November. Blast!

The game's November 4 launch date was announced by the Japanese dev house and its European publishing partner, PQube, this morning, alongside a slew of new media. But considering the game came out last May in North America, there's a possibility you've already had your fill of video-based gameplay. But have you seen BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2's gameplay ... set to a rockin' metal riff? We thought not!

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Soldiers are Dreamers

September 30th, 2011 No comments
Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, Peter Willington makes the transition from game critic to developer with Soldiers are Dreamers.

What's your game called, and what's it about?

The title of my game is Soldiers Are Dreamers, taken from the poem "Dreamers" by Siegfried Sassoon, a celebrated World War I poet. It's inspired by war but I've tried to be as ambiguous as possible when it comes to the actual message and meaning. I really want those that experience it to make their own interpretations on what the narrative itself is.

WRUP: Pugs of War

September 30th, 2011 No comments
We don't know why anyone even tries to reach Level 50 in Gears of War 3's Horde mode with a pug. They're worthless, it's like herding cats. They don't even have thumbs.

What's everyone playing?

Final part of Portal 2 soundtrack now free to download

Final part of Portal 2 soundtrack now free to download screenshot

Have you ever heard of drip marketing? The idea behind it is that you have an asset that people want, often information but it could be anything, and you keep people engaged with you and the product you're marketing by slowly feeding them tiny portions of the full product for free. It's one of the most effective means of creating customer loyalty.

In a related note, the third and final portion of the Portal 2 soundtrack has just been released by Valve. You may now go and pick up the tracks you're missing or download the entire 64-track release in one easy file. Go forth and consume, consumer.

[Lights Out: A Destructoid Newsreel is a video series highlighting a selection of Destructoid staff and contributors, featuring a discussion of the news of the day over a spirited round of Team Fortress 2. You can play with Destructoid on their TF2 Server - http://dtoid.it/tf2server]

Time to wrap up the week with a little of that sweet Team Fortress 2. And, while we're at it, another edition of Lights Out. I'm joined once again by Jordan Devore and Brett Zeidler to discuss the stories that matter to gamers. Or, at least the ones who happen to be recording the show.

In tonight's episode, we discuss the Battlefield 3 public beta and how well that's been going. We also touch on Netflix's new spin-off service Qwikster and their upcoming games initiative and how it is that the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection wound up topping the charts this week.

Gotham City Impostors beta starts October 5

September 30th, 2011 No comments

We knew the beta was gearing up, but we had no idea it'd be so soon. Consider us pleasantly surprised! Warner Bros. has dated the closed Gotham City Impostors beta for October 5, this upcoming Wednesday, 1UP reports.

If you're one of the lucky chosen few, you'll want to check out the above video, which walks us through customizing a loadout and some of the core gameplay mechanics. It's also got an eerily cheery dude with a soul patch named Lucas, if that's what you're into.
