Chief Pokemon cartoon writer dies at age 61

October 31st, 2010 No comments
Chief-pokemon-cartoon-writer-dies-at-age-61-header

I was a bit too old when the Pokémon cartoons started rolling out so they don't hold a truly cherished spot in my heart, but for any kid (and kids at heart) growing up in the 90s we've got a bit of sad news. Takeshi Shudo, the chief writer for the Pokémon anime passed away at the age of 61. He suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Shudo was also the creator of the anime classic Magical Princess Minky Momo and worked on Martian Successor Nadesico and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I'm not familiar with these so I can't really comment, but it sounds like he had a pretty prolific life in anime.

I seriously doubt anyone thought that much about the writing while watching an episode of Pokémon, but for an entire generation of children this man's writing was something they experienced on a weekly, if not daily, basis. The stories he created made one of the most popular shows in the world and that has to be saying something.

Got any favorite episodes you want to share with us?

Are videogame publishers trashing the planet?

Are videogame publishers trashing the planet?

Gamespot passes along news of a Greenpeace report that indicts Microsoft and Nintendo as among the least eco-friendly electronics companies.

In the latest Guide to Greener Electronics from environmentalist organization Greenpeace, Microsoft saw its approval ratings from the group slide, putting it within striking distance of Nintendo for the least green electronics maker in the guide. The Wii maker has held a viselike grip on the quarterly report's bottom spot since it was first added to the list in November of 2007.

Call of Duty: Black Ops launch trailer is just a shot away, it’s just a shot away

October 31st, 2010 No comments
Premiering during tonight's Sunday Night football game is this Rolling Stones-infused Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer which proclaims - for once in advertising, not hyperbolically - that it's the "biggest game of 2010." What makes it so big? We could point out the base jumping, the SR-71 Blackbird, or any of the other cinematic touchstones that Treyarch is trotting out for its fourth take on the blockbuster series. Instead, we're going to suggest that any marketing budget that licenses The Rolling Stones for a Sunday Night Football spot is enough to convince us it's a "big" video game. Either that or it's Windows 95.

Japanese hardware sales, Oct. 18 – Oct. 24: Halloween checklist edition

October 31st, 2010 No comments
Quick! There's only a few precious minutes left in this, the most spookiest night of the year. Have you completed the following tasks, all of which are essential to enjoying All Hallows' Eve to its fullest?
  • Watched Tim Curry's infinitely upsetting music video, "Anything Can Happen on Halloween."
  • Attended a party wearing an intricate, embarrassing costume, while everyone else wears their regular clothes while swearing that they're actually dressed up like Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Nice try, jerks.
  • Went to see whatever Saw sequel is in theaters this year. What is it now, Saw 9? Saw in Space?
  • Silently judged the person in front of you at the supermarket check-out line who's purchasing a large bag of Bit-O-Honey. Yeah, we're sure the trick-or-treaters on your block are going to love those, weirdo.
  • Re-watched Tim Curry's infinitely upsetting music video, "Anything Can Happen on Halloween," taking a moment to wonder why Tim Curry is asking whether anybody has seen his tambourine, when he's clearly holding it in his hands and playing it.

Zombie Cow’s Privates to receive extension in 2011

October 31st, 2010 No comments
Zombie Cow's educational, dirty-minded twin-stick shooter, Privates, will see its rich, lore-filled universe expanded sometime next year with a free DLC expansion. Cow's Dan Marshall explained on the developer's blog, "we've decided to go all-out and make a whole new adventure, this time set inside a gentleman's bits," which may be the first and only time you'll ever hear a video game creator make that claim when referring to one of his studio's projects. Soak in this moment. Really soak it in.

Of course, the expansion won't just add the novelty of its new, phallic setting -- it will also "cram in new gameplay mechanics, new enemy types, new locations, and a new player character." Keep an eye out for the add-on sometime around Easter next year. But hopefully not on Easter, because we can't imagine anything more alarming to find in our baskets than a big pile of STDs.

More Last Flight gameplay splashes blood all over a plane

October 31st, 2010 No comments
More-last-flight-gameplay-splashes-blood-all-over-a-plane-header

I'm not sure why, but I always forget that Last Flight exist. Then something like this video pops up and I'm reminded that I really want it. Zombies on a plane just seem as natural as snakes on a plane. Thankfully the WiiWare game also looks like it’s going to be pretty darn fun aside from its ingenious subject matter.

The video also comes with the information that developer Bloober Team is in the final stages of testing. We're probably going to be actually seeing this sometime soon. The release revealing the near completion of the game also stresses that they were heavily inspired by the likes of Snake on a Plane (duh) and plenty of other pop culture references. Can't really pick any up in the gameplay, but at least there’s plenty of zombie killin'.

Goldeneye 007 enemies are looking sharp

October 31st, 2010 No comments
There's nothing quite like witnessing the likes of Baron Samedi and Francisco Scaramanga -- fully digitally rendered from forthcoming game Goldeneye 007 -- before being riddled with PP7 bullets. But that's just what Activision has sent over: beautiful artist renditions of Bond's worst enemies, before their inevitable demises.

ESA publishes ’2010 Essential Facts’ for Canadian game industry

October 31st, 2010 No comments
The Entertainment Software Association recently released its "2010 Essential Facts" report, an annual catalog of statistics regarding video game sales and consumers, for the Canadian games industry (PDF). According to the group's study, 47 percent of Canadian households own a PS3, 360 or Wii, and the average gamer's age is 33 -- both of which mirror the 2010 Essential Facts report on the American games industry (PDF).

The similarities don't stop there -- the study found that 38 percent of Canadian gamers are women, compared to the US' 40 percent. Also, stats regarding parental supervision while purchasing and playing games is as reassuringly high as it was for American parents. Check out a few video testimonials from Canadian game developers about the relative radness of their nation's gaming industry after the jump.
