Happy Valentine's Day from Gears of War

January 31st, 2010 No comments

Happy Valentine's Day from Gears of War screenshot

Epic is giving us all a Valentine's Day gift of... ummm... epic proportions. The guys over at the Epic forums put together a list of experience bonuses that could be implemented as a Valentine's gift to the community, and now they have chosen three that they will be giving unto us Feb. 8 through Feb. 14. The total amount of days hasn't been announced yet, but it will be at least three.

The bonuses we will get? Revives are double points in all game types, Wingman is double normal XP (4x XP) and Horde is double XP. Wooo, points and things. I'm ditching this box of chocolates I got my fiancee and delivering to her three days of me playing Gears of War 2 online. She loves when I totally ignore her to play videogames.

January 2010 ended with the release of one of the best games of the year in Mass Effect 2. At least -- we assume it's one of the best games of the year. If they get much better than this, we're going to be in good shape. However, PC gamers have even more goodness in store for February. Before we enter a new month let's look back at the events of the last seven days in January.

Turning Japanese: DQ bar video

January 31st, 2010 No comments

Turning Japanese: DQ bar video screenshot

We got the news that a Dragon Quest bar called Luida's Pub was coming about a month ago. It opened three days ago and since then I'm sure it has been jam packed with Japanese people trying all the DQ themed food and admiring the walls full toys and statues. While I was expecting more of a fast foody flair to the whole thing it looks like Luida's Pub is rocking it classy style.

Most of the video is an interview I can't understand, but I bet he's saying things like "We're trying to offer some high quality food with the DQ theme that all Japanese love," or "What is really great about Luida's Pub is that you can get great food and eat it in a upscale atmosphere." Interspersed between the talking are shots of some familiarly styled food and enough Slime related stuff to make you wonder just what the little fellows can't be made out of.

GameStop COO proclaims need for educating customers about DLC

January 31st, 2010 No comments
GameStop's chief operating officer says the retailer must educate customers on the benefits of downloadable content for retail games. Speaking on a panel at the Game Business Law conference, J. Paul Raines said GameStop must embrace the growing trend of DLC if it hopes to survive in the category. "Downloadable content is a good thing because it enhances and extends games," he told the panel. While the company doesn't have a direct line to console customers seeking additional content, it does offer retail releases of some high-profile DLC.

Raines believes that the biggest challenge for the downloadable market is customer understanding of DLC's availability and how to access the content. "That business could grow medium double digits today," he told the panel at Southern Methodist University. "Customer acquisition continues to be a huge part of the spend in this business." It is this view that has the company set on informing its customers of new content available for the games it sells.

While it may appear that the sky is falling in the GameStop camp, following cut profit forecasts and share drops during the holiday season, Raines isn't rushing for the closest bomb-shelter. "Rumors of our demise have been greatly exaggerated," he countered. "We'll release financials in a few weeks, so you'll see if we're still in business."

Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley coming stateside in April

January 31st, 2010 No comments
Considering the extent to which Farmville has enraptured the hearts and minds of 95 percent of the Facebook-using populace, we're not surprised that Natsume has decided to bring yet another installment in the Harvest Moon franchise to the States. According to Siliconera, American store shelves will play host to Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley for the PSP in April.

The game will task you with staving off the expansion of The Funland Corporation's chain of amusement parks into your home town of Leaf Valley. You'll do so in the most logical manner imaginable: By repeatedly performing various agricultural chores. Yeah, that'll show 'em!

Pong goes 3D, fails

January 31st, 2010 No comments

Pong goes 3D, fails screenshot

While many of us would argue that Pong in 3D is called tennis a few enterprising gamers out there thought differently. They thought that Pong in 3D should be Pong. So they went ahead and made a tabletop version of it with a real ball and little flippy pads. It's an interesting concept, but in practice it seems to fall a little flat.

The guys describe this as their first attempt at it so I suppose the lack of functionality can be excused, but you'd think they would have thought to slant the table towards each side a bit so the ball wouldn't stop rolling. I think if they do a bit more work on it and maybe make those numbers change automatically when the ball is missed they could have the next Crossfire in their hands.

First issue of Mass Effect iPhone comic free on launch day

January 31st, 2010 No comments
Beginning February 3, the first issue of the four-part comic series Mass Effect: Redemption will be available on the iTunes App Store. To celebrate its release, Dark Horse and EA have announced the issue will be free for a limited time. How limited is the "free digital comic" window? One day only. After February 3, the digital release is bumped up to 99 cents. Of course, if you're a Mass Effect 2 fanatic you probably own the collectors' edition, which included a mini-version of the first issue. But, if you love moving pictures, a free digital comic is a hard thing to ignore.

Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West previewed, screenshotted

January 31st, 2010 No comments
Hang on a sec, are you trying to tell us that you weren't at the Paradox Interactive Convention in Stockholm, Sweden last week when the publisher showed off its upcoming game, Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West? Lucky for you then that Paradox Interactive recently released a mélange of screenshots and a developer interview to help assuage your fear of totally missing out. Developed by Swedish company Fatshark, Lead and Gold is a third-person multiplayer-focused shooter set in the Old West.

As described by executive producer Martin Wahlund in the video after the break, the game features a a variety of different competitive multiplayer modes (variations on the traditional "team deathmatch" and "capture the flag," among others) to be played by the game's four classes. Set for release in "Q2 2010," we have to imagine we'll be getting some face time with the game (and news on which consoles it's coming to) in the not too distant future.

Coaching and Encouragement [Night Note]

January 31st, 2010 No comments

To: Luke
From: Owen

My friends here invited me to their 6-year-old daughter's basketball game on Saturday. Her team is in fact coached by Bev Smith, the former head coach of the University of Oregon's women's team, who carries one hell of a resume for anyone who's ever coached in a middle school gym. Smith was also a two-time all-American as a player at Oregon, a two-time medalist on Canada's Olympic team, and in 2004 was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn. With that kind of pedigree, an overwhelming victory was not unexpected. Her team, the Greyhounds, breezed.

Then again, you're talking about first graders, so it's not like Smith has to coach the finer points of a dribble-drive motion offense. Traveling and double-dribble aren't called, so the kids run up and down the court at will and passing is often accomplished by missing a shot. Still, getting five children at that age to think of others, share the ball, and try to work as a team is a sizeable enough task.

The mother of another girl on this team lamented her daughter's shyness and anxiety about shooting the ball and promised her a quarter for every shot the little girl took and a dollar for every one she made. She paid a $1.75 bounty for a 1-for-4 afternoon.
